Louie Bellson marked his birth date of July 6, 1924 with a three-day event called the "Welcome Home Celebration" in Rock Falls, Illinois.
In the mid-'50s, Louie served as drummer and musical director for the late African-American vocalist, actress, and UN ambassador Pearl Bailey, who he married during a time of extreme racial tension.
Bellson's wife of twelve years, Francine, has decorated the walls of their Sherman Oaks home to pay tribute to her husband's career and contribution to the world.

One of the last survivors of the big band leaders, Louie Bellson was a pioneer of several technical innovations on the drums, including the use of double bass drums, and a leading educator in jazz drum.
Not only was he Ellington's drummer, but the bandleader also performed some of Bellson's earliest arrangements, such as "Skin Deep" and "The Hawk Talks." His relationship with Ellington continued long after he served the band as its regular drummer.
Bellson appeared with Ellington on special occasions, such as the recording of A Drum is a Woman in 1956, and Ellington's first sacred concert in 1965.

He performs "Wanderlust" in a trio with pianist Frank Strazzeri and bassist George Duvivier (who wrote the song); features tenor saxophonist Ted Nash (one of his main discoveries) on four quartet tunes; and has Matt Catingub make the group a quintet on three numbers, taking one song apiece on alto, tenor and soprano.
Several of the pieces -- either group originals or obscurities -- are blues-based; a few are more complex, and all of them swing in a spirited fashion, as one would expect from a Louie Bellson date.
