Housed in the historical archives in the Cultural Education Center are a series of bird paintings by Louis Agassiz Fuertes done for The Birds of New York by Elon Howard Eaton in 1910 (vol.1) and 1914 (vol.2).
Louis Agassiz Fuertes (1874-1927), was born and worked most of his life in Ithaca, NY.

PBS - Harriman: Louis Agassiz Fuertes
Louis Agassiz Fuertes, photographed in Ithaca, New York studio in 1926.
Fuertes' father, who had studied in his native Puerto Rico before taking a teaching job at Cornell, took little Louis to the local library to study Birds of America, the huge and beautifully rendered prints of birds made early in the century by John James Audubon.
Fuertes' fortunes changed when Elliott Coues, the nation's leading ornithologist, took the young artist "under his wing." He introduced him to the academic world, and helped him get commissions for illustrations.

 FUERTES, LOUIS AGASSIZ
Louis Agassiz Fuertes, one of the most widely acclaimed American ornithological artists of his time, painted this watercolor of flamingos probably around 1900, a period of extensive travel on a number of scientific expeditions, and of remarkable productivity.
In this fully worked, refined watercolor, Fuertes depicted a group of the vivid birds standing calmly in shallow, calm water, which reflects the violet haze of the dusk sky as well as the shadows of the elegant birds.
Born in Ithaca, New York, Fuertes began drawing birds at an early age, and his illustrations qualified him as an associate member of the American Ornithologists' Union by the time he was seventeen.
