Berthier's journal, cast in the form of letters to a friend, covering the period from his departure from France (May 10, 1780) to the departure from Phillipsburg for Yorktown (August 26, 1781), and the period from his sailing from Boston (December 24, 1782) to April 1783.
Although Berthier's maps are the most spectacular part of the papers at Princeton, they cannot be fully appreciated without the accompanying textual material which provides a detailed description and explanation of the routes covered by the maps.
