Armstrong first achieved fame as a trumpeter, but was also one of the most influential jazz singers, and towards the end of his career was best known as a vocalist.
Armstrong was born to a poor family in New Orleans, Louisiana.
Armstrong died of a heart attack in 1971 at age 69.

The band was renamed Louis Armstrong and his Orchestra and was one of the most popular acts of the Swing era.
For the next nine years the Louis Armstrong Orchestra continued to tour and release records, but as the 1940s drew to a close the public's taste in Jazz began to shift away from the commercial sounds of the Swing era and big band Jazz.

Louis Armstrong was born on August 4, 1901, in New Orleans, Louisiana, the birthplace of jazz.
Armstrong, fondly known as "Satchmo" (which is short for "Satchelmouth" referring to the size of his mouth) or "Pops," had a sense of humor, natural and unassuming manner, and positive disposition that made everyone around him feel good.
Armstrong continued his touring and recording activities with Henderson's group and also made recordings with Sidney Bechet, Ma Rainey, and Bessie Smith.

Louis Armstrong and his Orchestra was one of the most popular bands in Jazz history and one of the driving forces of Swing style that came to dominate popular music of the 1930s and 1940s.
In 1929 Louis Armstrong was hired to play in the pit band of the popular all Black musical revue Hot Chocolates, which featured the music of Andy Razaf and Fats Waller.
In 1934 Armstrong took over the Luis Russell Orchestra and from then on they became known as the Louis Armstrong Orchestra with Russell acting as musical director.

After a brief sojourn with Fletcher Henderson's band in the mid-1920s, Louis Armstrong returned to Chicago and didn't play in New York again until 1929, when he came East with Carroll Dickerson's group.
That June, the all-fl revue Hot Chocolates opened and, by the fall, Armstrong was appearing in it as a special cast member and then performing with Dickerson at the Savoy Ballroom after the curtain.
Louis' playing and singing here electrifies the listener with its daring unconventional ideas--including the quotation from "Rhapsody In Blue" during his solo.

After the days of the Hot Five and Hot Seven were over Louis Armstrong, the greatest jazz trumpeter ever, played mainly with 'orchestras' - some being led by him.
Both Armstrong's playing and singing have always shown rare individuality and although many have tried to copy both, no one has managed it with any convincing success.
I feel the Armstrong aficionado would be hard pressed to buy this CD but for someone who just wants 'some Armstrong' for their collection then this is for them.

I am particularly intrigued by Louis' renditions of songs that Bing Crosby (who was also recording for Decca) had made popular.
Crosby and Armstrong had different kinds of voices and musical approaches, but they possessed similar instincts underneath, as "On the Sentimental Side" and "I've Got a Pocketful of Dreams" indicate.
