  Louis Durey
Louis Durey was born in Paris the son of a local businessman.
Durey communicated with his colleague, Darius Milhaud, and asked him to contribute a piano piece that would bring together the six composers who, in 1920 under the guidance of Erik Satie, were dubbed Les Six.
Durey was the oldest member and in the beginning was the moving spirit of the renowned assembly of composers.

Sleeve Notes - Songs by Louis Durey
Louis Durey, the silent Durey, is the incarnation of modesty and nobility.
Durey now found himself in a self-imposed artistic isolation which was to last more or less for the rest of his life apart from the support he received from artists of a similar political persuasion.
Durey’s is not the glorious dream of Duparc’s L’invitation au voyage: his Images à Crusoé was written in the wake of a terrible war, and for a crueller and less forgiving century.

 Louis Durey
Durey was a latecomer to music, beginning his studies only when he was 22.
Durey maintained a friendly relationship with Ravel, and in 1918 dedicated to him Neige, also for piano duet.
In 1921, Durey withdrew from the Groupe des Six, perhaps offended by the hostile and disrespectful attitude which his fellow members showed to Ravel.

Strongly influenced by Debussy's opera "Pelléas et Mélisande", Louis Durey joined Les Six (with Poulenc, Milhaud, Auric, Honegger and Tailleferre), the six young French composers under the influence of Satie and Cocteau, but abandoned them after a year to allow increasing scope for his political affiliations.
Durey wrote a Concertino for piano, wind instruments, double bass and timpani, a Mouvement symphonique for piano and strings and a string Sinfonietta, as well as a Fantaisie concertante for cello, among other relatively large scale compositions.
Durey's political affiliations are clear from his setting of two poems by Ho Chi Minh and the choral La longue marche, with words by Mao Tse Tung.

But Durey did not like Cocteau very much and his withdrawal from the Mariés meant the Groupe des Six was over the top.
After the Groupe des Six period Durey continued with his career.
Probably the least remembered of the Groupe des Six, Louis Durey died at Saint-Tropez, Var, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, France.

French composer Louis Durey (1888-1979) was one of who-knows-how-many artists to receive their first significant burst of creative inspiration after hearing Debussy's Pelléas et Mélisande, and throughout the four dozen songs on this fascinating program we hear the quietly and pleasingly persistent influence of the older master's most unobtrusive, subtly colored dramatic style.
Durey was a member of "Les Six" (a good trivia question, yes?) and a one-time colleague of Jean Cocteau who soon distanced himself from the writer/artist, offended by Cocteau's snobbish, self-absorbed mannerisms, dishonest criticisms, "incredibly light mind", and annoying "pretend baby-games".
Durey uses the piano effectively both for background washes and to accent or define a mood.

 Springtime in Paris: Les Six
Three weeks after the premiere of Parade, Blaise Cendrars organized an evening of poetry and music in honor of the ballet, attended by artists and musicians who rallied around Satie, forming the group Les Nouveaux Jeunes, and marking the emergence of a new musical avant-garde.
Louis Durey joined Les Six by accident, it seems, little aware that the artistic group he was joining were in fact creating a music association based on little more than friendship.
Together with Honegger and Durey he was one of the founding members of the group, but his music had more in common with that of Poulenc, his contemporary, than that of Honegger and Durey, his seniors.
