  Louis Horst and Anna Sokolow
Louis Horst was the musical director for Denishawn (1916-1925) and Graham.
Louis Horst's assistant Anna always had a dance to demonstrate what Louis wanted.
Lyric Suite is the work that caused Louis Horst to remark that Anna was now a choreographer with a language of her own.

DANCE: TRIBUTE PAID TO LOUIS HORST - New York Times
Horst was born 100 years ago and died 20 years ago.
From Horst, Miss Sokolow said, ''I learned that, without structure, you could have a million ideas, yet they wouldn't come to life on stage.'' Horst insisted that novice choreographers be aware of basic concepts of space, time, energy and shape.
Horst may have been an ogre in the classroom, but he made himself an ogre because he loved dance.

 [No title]
Horst was a major figure in the modern dance scene of the 1920s, 30s and 40s.
But perhaps most importantly, Horst taught Graham about musical form and encouraged her to work with contemporary composers rather than making dances to eighteenth and nineteenth-century music, as her solo dance predecessors had done.
Though the dances Graham created in the late 1920s were derivative of Denishawn pieces, by 1930 she was beginning to identify a new system of movement and new principles of choreography.

By the time Rudko became Horst's assistant, she had had an extensive teaching career at the High School for the Performing Arts, where she taught from 1949 until the mid-fifties, and served at one point as acting chair of the dance faculty.
Her studies with Margaret H'Doubler at Wisconsin and Horst in New York focused on intellectual as well as on aesthetic and expressive concerns.

The Center for Choreography's Vision: the birth of modern dance
Then in the 1960's, widespread attitudes of rebellion and change influenced a new generation of choreographers who became known as the postmodern generation.
The new artists rejected the compositional forms created by people like Louis Horst and Doris Humphrey, and hailed the use of everyday movement as valid performance art.
This view caused some to suggest that postmodern dancers had lost much of what was valuable to dance.

Paul Taylor 70th A Birthday Remembrance Dance Magazine - Find Articles
My first awareness of Paul Taylor the choreographer was when I read Louis Horst's piece in Dance Observer in 1957.
Horst's memorable review was of Paul's 7 New Dances, which deconstructed dance to its minimum by using not only everyday gestures and repetition, but also absolute stillness.
Louis Horst's review began by stating that Paul Taylor performed at the 92nd Street Y. That was followed by blank space and his signature at the bottom of the page.
