Louis Lazare Hoche (June 24, 1768 - September 19, 1797) was a (The Romance language spoken in France and in countries colonized by France) French general.
Hoche escaped execution, however, though imprisoned in Paris until the fall of (French revolutionary; leader of the Jacobins and architect of the Reign of Terror; was himself executed in a coup d'etat (1758-1794)) Robespierre.
After this Hoche was appointed to organise and command the troops destined for the invasion of (An island comprising the republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland) Ireland, and he started on this enterprise in December 1796.

Returning to France without having effected anything, Tone served for some months in the French army under Hoche; and in June 1797 he took part in preparations for a Dutch expedition to Ireland, which was to be supported by the French.
Napoleon Bonaparte, with whom Tone had several interviews about this time, was much less disposed than Hoche had been to undertake in earnest an Irish expedition; and when the rebellion broke out in Ireland in 1798 he had started for Egypt.
Tone, who was on board the Hoche, refused Bompard's offer of escape in a frigate before the action, and was taken prisoner when the Hoche was forced to surrender.

 Lazare Hoche
In the defence of Thionville in that year Hoche earned further promotion, and he served with credit in the operations of 1792-93 on the northern frontier of France.
Hoche showed himself equal to the crisis and inflicted a crushing blow on the Royalist cause by defeating and capturing de Sombreuil's expedition at Quiberon and Penthièvre (16th-21st of July 1795).
Hoche was at once transferred to the Rhine frontier, where he defeated the Austrians at Neuwied (April), though operations were soon afterwards brought to an end by the Preliminaries of Leoben.
