Fresnel lens - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
According to Smithsonian, the first Fresnel lens was used in 1822 in a lighthouse on the Gironde River in France, Cardovan Tower; its light could be seen from more than 20 miles out.
For each of these zones, the overall thickness of the lens is decreased, effectively chopping the continuous surface of a standard lens into a set of surfaces of the same curvature, with discontinuities between them.
Many fresnel instruments allow the lamp to be moved relative to the lens focal point, which creates a more or less hard-edged light beam.

NGC - NGC Summary   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-08-24)
Cosmetic contact lens wear should be approached cautiously with patients who present with any active anterior segment disease, especially ocular (or adnexal) inflammation, infection, or severe dry eye conditions, because of the possible increased risk of complications, especially corneal neovascularization or infection.
Contact lens use should therefore be approached cautiously for either the monocular patient (because of risk to the patient's only useful eye) or for the patient who is engaged in an avocation or vocation with exposure to a particularly dirty or dry environment.
Many of the complications of contact lens wear are also accompanied, and in some cases at least partially caused, by lid diseases such as blepharitis, meibomian gland dysfunction, and dry eye.

Lens replacement material may improve cataract treatment, eliminate bifocals
New York, Sept. 8, 2003 -- Scientists at the Veterans Affairs (VA) Hospital and Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis are developing a gel-like material that eventually could be used to replace diseased and aging lenses in the eyes of patients with cataracts.
The current treatment for cataracts is to remove the old lens material and replace it with a flexible plastic lens.
The new strategy would be to carefully remove the aging and clouded lens material from the lens' capsular bag (the part of the eye that holds the lens), while leaving that structure intact.

Lens replacement material holds prospect of 'young' eyes for people over 40
Other research groups are also working on replacement lens materials, but Fetsch believes her material is different in several ways.
One advantage of this is that only a very small injection hole is required to place the lens material in the bag, thus avoiding the common surgical technique of cutting a slit to insert a replacement lens.

Like other tissues, the lens maintains a submicromolar intracellular cytosolic Ca2+ concentration, the importance of which is illustrated by the observation that loss of intracellular cytosolic Ca2+ homeostasis in the lens is a key factor in the most common form of human cataract in which opacity occurs in the lens.
