McLane was born in Smyrna, Delaware in 1786.
When McLane opposed the removal of Federal deposits from the Bank of the United States and their redeposit in state banks (McLane felt the state banks were unsafe), Jackson removed him from the office of Treasury and gave him a recess appointment as Secretary of State, replacing McLane with William J. Duane.
McLane died in Baltimore, Maryland in 1857 and was buried in Greenmount Cemetery.

Louis McLane was born May 28, 1786, in Smyrna, Delaware.
McLane volunteered for the Wilmington Artillery Company during the War of 1812; following the war, he was elected as a Jeffersonian Republican to U.S. House of Representatives (1817-1827) and the Senate (1827-1829).
McLane would serve as a delegate to the Maryland constitutional convention in 1850 before dying in Baltimore on October 7, 1857.

McLANE, LOUIS (1786I 857), American political leader, was born in Smyrna, Delaware, on the 28th of May 1786, son of Allan McLane (1746-1829), a well-known Revolutionary soldier.
His son, ROBERT MILLIGAN MCLANE (1815-1898), graduated at West Point in 1837, resigned from the army in 1843, and practised law in Baltimore.
MACLAREN, CHARLES (1782-1866), Scottish editor, was born at Ormiston, Haddingtonshire, on the 7th of October 1782, the son of a farmer and cattle-dealer.

As Secretary of the Treasury, he urged Congress to renew the Bank's charter when the measure was introduced in 1832, although Jackson was opposed to renewal.
Though McLane refused to withdraw the deposits, he wanted to avoid further conflict with Jackson and readily agreed to move to the position of Secretary of State when that office became available in 1833.

Louis McLane began his public career in 1817 when he won election to the House of Representatives.
A B&O employee who came to know McLane well during his twelve-year tenure found him "not a pleasant person" and "at times uncertain." On the whole, however, he proved good for the railroad, and under his leadership the B&O was transformed from a financially troubled operation to a thriving one.
Among the most noteworthy advances that McLane oversaw was the completion of track from Harpers Ferry to Cumberland, Maryland, where it made an important linkup with the National Road that went westward into the country's interior.

McLane proposed to solve this problem by creating a comptroller of the treasury with a salary of $3,000 per year (this was later amended to $2,500).

McLane then told Jackson that once the national debt was payed off, the additional revenue could go to military defense, arming the state militias, building armories, and improving the army and navy.
McLane asked Jackson to not tell anyone about the Bank and its possible recharterment until after McLane had reported the recommendations for the recharter to the Ways and Means Committee.

USRC Louis McLane, a 357-ton (burden) iron-hulled side-wheel revenue cutter, was built at Wilmington, Delaware, in 1861 as the commercial steamship Virginia Dare.
The cutter was renamed Louis McLane in June 1873.
She became the Revenue Cutter Delaware in August 1865 and was renamed Louis McLane in 1873.

The McLANE was an iron-hulled vessel and served with the North Atlantic Squadron.
The vessel had originally been constructed as the side-wheel steamship VIRGINIA DARE, but was purchased on by the U.S. Navy in October 1861 and commissioned as the U.S.S. In August, 1865, she was sold to the Department of the Treasury, becoming the RMS (Revenue Marine Service) DELAWARE.
She was renamed RMS LOUIS McLANE on June 1873 and then USRC LOUIS McLANE on July 31, 1894.

Contemporary accounts of travel on the Overland Mail Company's stage line during the years 1858 to 1861, when it was operating between St. Louis and Memphis, the two eastern terminals, and San Francisco, are all too few.
They furnish a full and accurate account of the controversy that raged over the various proposed transcontinental routes for a mail-and-passenger stage line, which had been authorized by an act of Congress in March 1857.
