  SOUTH AFRICAN MUSIC
Born in Langa, Cape Town in 1940, drummer and bandleader Louis Tebogo Moholo left South Africa in 1964 as a member of the Blue Notes with Chris McGregor (p), Mongezi Feza (tpt), Johnny Dyani (b), Nick Moyake and Dudu Pukwana (saxophones).
As a youth, Moholo was active with boy scout marching bands, and later performed on kit drums with Ronnie Beer's 'Swinging City Six'.
Acclaimed as a free form, avant garde drummer, Moholo is known for his polyrhythmic expression, and his work with an array of musicians, including Ornette Coleman, Archie Shepp, Keith Tippet, Irene Schwezer, Steve Lacey, Curtis Clarke, Cecil Taylor, and Derek Blakey.

I had never met Louis Moholo, but only heard those vivid Brotherhood of Breath recordings, seen the expressive anger in the seminal photographs Basil Breakey caught in Athlone and listened to the countless European musicians gushing about his performances.
Even though there were parallel streams of avant-garde jazz in the America's at the same time Louis Moholo was one of the pioneering musicians of avant-garde jazz music - an expressive movement building on the desperate need for a world-wide assertion of freedom and the right to live beyond rules.
Louis is convinced that the form is still real, still relevant.

Guardian | Louis Moholo/ Stan Tracey, Khumbula
Three decades on, Moholo remains the formidable free-improviser he always was - but Tracey has largely returned to the structured, song-shaped swinging music he began with.
It's true that Tracey sounds at times like a man trying out a punchline on a fellow-conversationalist who barrels on without hearing it: he is used to building an improvisation to a cliffhanging resolution that's picked up by others as a trigger for cruising swing.
Moholo, by contrast, sustains a hissing, simmering kind of rhythmic trance rather than a groove, depriving Tracey of his usual narrative shapes.

Louis Moholo, last surviving member of legendary SA jazz exiles, The Brotherhood of Breath introduces a quintet of young talent at the CTIJF, including Octavio Rachabane, daughter of Barney Rachabane, on vocals.
Moholo's last big-stage performances were at the 2003 Return To Roots: International Jazz Comes Home series in Gauteng, a three-day homecoming celebration by former exiled jazz musicians and with Swiss jazz pianist Irene Schweizer as part of the International Classical Music Festival in the same year.
It was also, Moholo admits, a deliberately confrontational name chosen as a way for Moholo to play yet another part in the changing times of the country, to add the freedom-push of his music to the cries for freedom across the soon to be liberated country.

Irene Schweizer and Louis Moholo (Intakt, 1988) is one of those albums you put on out of curiosity, yet you can't get out of your seat until it's finished playing at least once through, if not twice.
The tune is nearly unrecognizable for four and a half minutes until the pianist launches into the meat of McGregor's theme, confining herself to its beautiful cadences while exploring it at the lowest and highest registers of her instrument.

Moholo was responsible for a single favorite album of mine (one that desperately needs re-issuance on disc), his awesome “Spirits Rejoice!” on Ogun that combined the finest of London’s improv community (including Tippett) with stunningly gorgeous, South African derived thematic material.
On occasion, Tippett and Moholo get a little something going, sounding natural and unforced and propelling themselves into a fluid cadence, but though these are easily the highlights of the disc, they’re all too rare.
This non-stop glossolalia can be made to work, of course, if you have musicians of the caliber of, say, Cecil Taylor, who consistently have amazing ideas coursing out of their brains but it’s a damn hard thing to pull off otherwise, at least from my current vantage point.
