Schneider v. County of San Diego
Schneider then filed a Rule 59(e) motion to amend the judgment, requesting $64,931.07 in prejudgment interest for the takings claim and $2 in nominal damages for the due process claim, which the County contested.
Because Schneider was entitled as a matter of law to judgment and nominal damages on his procedural due process claim, the district court abused its discretion in denying his Rule 59(e) motion to amend the judgment to include $2 in nominal damages.
Schneider requested an award of prejudgment interest at a fixed rate of 7.66%, compounded annually, for the period between the removal and the judgment (12/12/89-1/26/99).

US Government Knew of Threat from Asbestos at Plant Here ANDREW SCHNEIDER / St. Louis Post-Dispatch 24jan04
The St. Louis plant, according to the EPA, received more than 200 million pounds of the tainted ore. It is one of 28 plants that received the largest amount of dangerous ore and are at the top of the government's list for examination.
The St. Louis data from 1980 indicate that there were residents within six-tenths of a mile of the site and that exposure to those individuals was high, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
The difficulty faced by Clardy in St. Louis and by the disease registry throughout the rest of the country is that at almost all sites, neither workers at the plant nor those living in the surrounding neighborhoods were aware that asbestos was being released by these operations.

Later disowning the Freudian model, Schneider's line of inquiry led nevertheless to studies of practical psychologies behind economic conduct (e.g., deferred gratification) and their unanticipated consequences (as depicted by the Scottish moralists).
Schneider was a functionalist in Merton's middle-range, ad hoc manner rather than in Parsons's system approach.
Schneider's reader, Religion, Culture, and Society (Wiley 1964), influenced a generation of scholars in the sociology of religion; his Sociological Approach to Religion (Wiley 1970) promoted functionalism in an era in which younger sociologists found that functionalism legitimated the status quo in a way that Schneider himself, ironically, would not have wished.
