Le Brocquy was impressed by the resilience and independence of the travelling communities, who claim descent from those displaced by the persecution and famine which have bedevilled Irish history.
From his writing it is clear that le Brocquy not only sumpathised with their plight but, as an artist who had escaped from Ireland to defy the draconian grip of its social and moral establishments, identified with it.
Although its subject-matter is a reflection of le Brocquy’s new awareness of the ancient rhythms of Irish life from which, as a town-dweller from the anglicized middle classes, he had been shielded, its artistic references infer a much broader and more international reading for it.

Le Brocquy, in the manner of earlier artists, like Manet and Picasso, was working in the ancient tradition of the 'major painting'; a work that summed up what a painter stood for and showed what he could do when at full stretch.
In June 1956 le Brocquy represented Ireland, with the sculptor Hilary Heron, at the Venice Biennale.
Le Brocquy is the only living artist to have a work on show as part of the permanent collection.

Louis le Brocquy is one of the most internationally renowned of Irish artists.
le Brocquy studied chemistry at Trinity College, Dublin and worked in the family firm, the Greenmount Oil Company until 1938.
In 1996 there was a major retrospective of his work at the Irish Museum of Modern Art and in 1998 he was awarded the Glen Dimplex prize for sustained contribution to the arts in Ireland.

A major exhibition featuring the work of Irish artist Louis le Brocquy is due to go on public display at the Hunt Museum in Limerick this evening.
The exhibition also includes 'Man Creating Bird', 'In Fear of Cain' and 'Army Massing', as well as the Eden Tappestries, the Procession Paintings and the Cuchulainn Tapestries.
The exhibition is the biggest being undertaken to celebrate le Brocquy's 90th year, and was curated by his son Pierre and Virgina Teehan, Director of the Hunt Museum.
