Henri-Elzéar's son, Louis-Alexandre Taschereau would serve as Premier of Quebec and his grandson, Robert Taschereau would follow in his grandfather's footsteps and serve as Chief Justice of Canada.
He was the nephew of Elzéar Alexandre Cardinal Taschereau.
Taschereau entered politics in 1861 when he was elected to the Legislative Assembly of what was then the Province of Canada where he opposed Canadian Confederation.

He was the son of Louis-Alexandre Taschereau, Premier of Québec from 1920 to 1936 and the grandson of Jean-Thomas Taschereau, who had been a judge on the Supreme Court of Canada.
In 1946, along with his colleague on the Court, Justice Kellock, he co-chaired the Royal Commission on Spying Activities in Canada, which was set up as a result of the so-called "Gouzenko Affair." On April 22, 1963, he was appointed Chief Justice of Canada.
