Louise Beavers Biography :: Hollywood.com   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-31)
Beavers began her performing career as a minstrel show singer, but when she moved to Hollywood in the early 20s, it was while working as a maid to actress Leatrice Joy.
Beavers was a very sunshiny performer, cast less often in period roles than McDaniel and, with a voice higher pitched than McDaniel's more gravely tones, a bit less inclined to be surly.
Work declined as the decade wore on before Beavers' death from a heart attack, but her talent and genuine contribution to the history of the fl image in US film were noted by her induction into the Black Filmmakers Hall of Fame in 1976.

African American Registry: Cincinnati's own, actress Louise Beavers
Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, Beavers first drew attention as part of an act known as the "Lady Minstrels." Despite her theatrical abilities and inclinations, she went to Hollywood, not as a performer, but as the maid of actress Leatrice Joy.
Although most often cast as the maid of the female star or of the starring couple, she had an opportunity to play a role equal to Claudette Colbert’s in the first film version of Imitation of Life (1934), in which both women juggle the demands of single parenthood and careers.

Louise Beavers had a role where there was actually some character development even if she was playing a "happy slave" role.
Indeed, Louise Beavers was a bit upset at some of the lines she had to say in the movie (despite the fact that her character was more developed than in other movies), according to film historian Donald Bogle, who commented on the film.

Washington, whose light complexion enables her to pass for Caucasian, finds herself unable to live in both the white and fl worlds, and as a result breaks off relations with Beavers and runs away from school, hoping to live as a white woman.
Audiences didn't seem to mind the rather downbeat ending of IMITATION OF LIFE (remade successfully in 1959, with Lana Turner starring under Douglas Sirk's direction), but there was a great deal of controversy over the basic elements of the narrative.
Beavers' interpretation has dated badly; she's either jolly or resigned and does not suggest the transistions from one emotion to another.

The original 1934 version, starring Louise Beavers and Claudette Colbert, is the first (and more faithful) screen adaptation of Fannie Hurst's eponymous novel, with Colbert and Beavers as the two mothers whose respective hearts are broken by their daughters.
After the two successfully market the African-American Beavers' prize-winning pancakes, their material success can't keep Beavers' lighter-skinned daughter from rejecting her in favor of "passing" in white society.
At the same time, Colbert and her daughter fall in love with the same man, and Colbert is forced to reject him.

Imitation Of Life (1934) - Movie Review
The great Claudette Colbert stars in an equally great melodrama from the Golden Age of Hollywood.
Colbert is a single mother who, after taking in an itinerant fl maid and fellow single mother (an impressive Louise Beavers), opens a pancake shop on the boardwalk and turns her enterprise into a success after boxing "Aunt Delilah's" pancake flour.
With a deep undercurrent involving gender roles and race relations (and this is deep in the era of segregation), it's a subtly different experience than the similar Mildred Pierce.
