Louise Lehzen - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Louise Lehzen was a native of Coburg in Germany, born the daughter of a Lutheran pastor.
She was part of the household of Princess Viktoria of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld, and served as nurse to Princess Feodora of Leiningen, the daughter of the Princess by her first husband, the Prince of Leiningen.
Lehzen also intrigued against Albert, advising Victoria that she was the Queen of England, and Albert her mere consort: she had but to order, and he must obey.

Lehzen was determined not to share her royal charge.
Prince Albert took an immediate dislike to Lehzen after the marriage and especially disliked her freely interrupting private time with his new wife and taking her off on "state business" as well as constantly gossiping in the nursery where she had no role.
Lehzen for her part was probably the source of many unkind, if not vicious, and largely untrue reports that appeared in the press.

An example of that status can be seen in the fact that three of the main monarchs with countries involved in the First World War on opposite sides were themselves either grandchildren of Victoria's or married to a grandchild of hers.

Louise Lehzen remained Victoria's confidante throughout the entire youth of the princess, and into her first years as Queen.
During a serious illness in 1835, the Duchess of Kent and Sir John Conroy attempted, among other schemes, to convince Victoria that she would not be fit to rule until she was aged 21 (although legally she would gain her majority at 18).
Lehzen fortunately was on hand to nurse Victoria, and supported her refusals of her mother's designs.

Lehzen was a cunning, manipulative woman of no great intelligence, and Albert believed, with good reason, that she was dangerous.
The conniving Lehzen had held Victoria in thrall for years, and the Queen took Lehzen's side against her husband.
Lehzen's departure freed Albert to play a part in the life and affairs of his adopted country.
