Lounge music - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Lounge music has enjoyed brief resurgences in popularity in the 1980s and 1990s, led by deliberately ironic figures such as Buster Poindexter and Jaymz Bee.
Lounge music can also specifically refer to a form of "hip" (not "hip-hop") generally easy listening music that was popular during the 50's and 60's, yet distinct from what was "pop rock" of that era.
Lounge music and musicians are a popular theme in popular culture, as already mentioned in the overview.

 Lounge Music History
Lounge (easy listening) refers to a strain of easy listening music from the '50s and '60s that was based on the lush styles of latter-day swing and big band music.
Lounge scaled these back, borrowing ideas from the worldbeat exploration of exotica, as well as the futuristic aspirations of space age pop.
Lounge wasn't as adventurous as either form, yet it wasn't as watered down as Muzak — instead, it occupied the middle ground, appealing to fans of traditional pop as well as space-age pop.

BBC News | MUSIC | The rise and rise of Lounge
For many, the first sign of this new taste for what was once derided as music for the middle-aged was a surprise pop hit for the Mike Flowers Pops in December 1995.
Mike Flowers' Wonderwall was an authentic-sounding Lounge arrangement of the Oasis rock song and hit number two in the British charts.
At a time when British pop music has been criticised for aiming too exclusively at the young, the success of Lounge has been a reminder of the cross-generational appeal of a good melody - and a good martini.

My point is, the "lounge music" fad of the late 90's helped me appreciate music to which I'd never given a second thought.
Lounge music, I also learned, was largely a hipster euphemism for "easy listening," and even that prickly phrase lost its sting for me. If Tony Bennett and Louis Prima are easy listening (and I'd argue they aren't), then sell me a one-way ticket to Squaresville and call me Poindexter.
