While a popular theory is that the Irish version, An Lú, means "the least"; Louth having been the smallest of the original counties, the county actually takes its name from the village of Louth (Lughbhadh in Irish, referring to the Celtic god Lugh).
County Louth is the smallest County in Ireland, it is the 'wee county'.

Louth Abbey was founded on the marshy Isle of Haverholme in 1137 on land given by Bishop Alexander of Lincoln to the Cistercians.
In 1139, at the preference of a large group of monks arriving from the motherhouse of Fountains (Yorkshire), the house was moved to Louth were it flourished as a major player in the county wool trade.
The school at Louth which eventually became King Edward VI Grammar School can lay claim to being one of the oldest in the country - we know that there was schooling in the town as early as the eighth century.

The navigation was completed at a cost of £3,822 compared to his original estimate of £3,000.
A petition was presented to parliament for a navigation based on his proposals and an Act was passed in March 1763.
