Built as a fortified royal palace for Philip Augustus in the centre of Paris and in the axis of the Champs-Élysées, parts of it were first opened to the public as a museum on November 8, 1793, during the French Revolution.
The central courtyard, occupied by the Louvre Pyramid built in 1989, serves as the main entrance to the museum.
The Louvre is mentioned briefly in a joke by Robin Williams in Live on Broadway.
