The Garden Lovage is one of the old English herbs that was formerly very generally cultivated, and is still occasionally cultivated as a sweet herb, and for the use in herbal medicine of its root, and to a less degree, the leaves and seeds.
Lovage was much used as a drug plant in the fourteenth century, its medicinal reputation probably being greatly founded on its pleasing aromatic odour.
Lovage is considered a “magic bullet” companion plant; much as borage helps protect almost all plants from pests, so lovage is thought to improve the health of almost all plants.

Much can be surmised about the band both from their name and from the title of Lovage's debut release, Music to Make Love to Your Old Lady By.
Lovage is actually an herb, popularized in 16th century England for its digestive, soothing, and supposedly aphrodisiac qualities, making the name an apt double-entendre for a band so concerned with things sexual.
Lovage's thematic content is split between the articulate use of innuendo and the equally articulate use of explicit sex - moans, groans and Mike Patton crooning, "Suck it, suck it!" On the song "Strangers on a Train," Jennifer Charles turns an "innocent" conversation about a drink into a metaphor for fellatio.

On the surface, Lovage spoofs the "music for lovers" genre, with cover art that puts pseudo-French captions with New Age nature photography and a goofy photo of Nakamura smoking a cigarette next to a gun and some roses.
The guest stars are called "well known sexperts", and there's a definition of "lovage" that describes it as a flatulence-reducing, abdominal pain-relieving herb.
Lovage isn't a cohesive concept album as much as it's a half-joking, half-serious stab at romantic mood music.

The final result is a work that draws on familiar idioms - pop, love songs, trip-hop, chin-scratching sampladelia - that sounds utterly original, perhaps the only work of the year that effectively analyzes and reflects the nature of the world: aggressively in pursuit of modernity, mechanical, yet intractably soft and vulnerable.
Ruby, the Scottish-based trip-hop band that dropped off the face of the earth after churning out its brilliant late '90s debut, Salt Peter, came out of hiding in 2001 with a new label deal (on Thirsty Ear) and a surprisingly strong sophomore LP.
But rather than watering down the group's sound, her restraint actually enhances the music, helping the band make a silky smooth transition into downtempo from the bouncy, edgy electronic pop they made in the '90s.
