Topic: Love (Cult album)

The Cult - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Death Cult existed on the fringes of the Gothic scene in London, and originally consisted of Ian Astbury (vocals), Billy Duffy (guitar), Jamie Stewart (bass) and Raymond Taylor Smith (aka Ray Mondo) (drums), the latter two having come from the Harrow, London based post punk band Ritual.
The Cult entered Jacob Studios in London in July and August 1985 to cut their second album, which became the 'Love' album (UK#3).
The Cult were sued again, this time for $61.000.000 by the mother of the Native American boy pictured on the cover of Ceremony, for alleged exploitation.

Lie: The Love & Terror Cult - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Lie: The Love and Terror Cult is an album by Charles Manson.
Is it worth pointing out that the Beach Boys' version does include significant changes (including a bridge that wasn't part of Manson's version, and changing the line "Cease to exist" to "Cease to resist", which does alter the meaning of the song).
All proceeds from the current version of the album, released by Awareness Records, are donated to a California fund for victims of violent crime.

The Cult Web - Pure Cult: The Single 1984 - 1995
Love is fairly gentle, compared to the expectations of a heavy sound from the Cult.
The opening songs on Cult albums serve the same purpose as the liner note for Ziggy Stardust (and the Cure's Disintegration and the title onscreen at the beginning of The Last Waltz): turn your stereo up as loud as you can stand.
On the album's cover Duffy strikes a guitar hero pose and in the background Astbury dripping with sweat at a concert seemingly throws his head back and triumphantly puts his fist in the air.

Death Cult released an eponymous EP in the summer of 1983; on the EP, Astbury reverted back to his given name.
Where both Southern Death Cult and Death Cult had been overtly influenced by post-punk, the Cult was a heavy hard rock band with slight psychedelic flourishes.
For their third album, the Cult shuffled its lineup -- Stewart moved to rhythm guitar, while former Zodiac Mindwarp bassist Kid Chaos joined the lineup -- and hired Rick Rubin as producer and the result, Electric, was their hardest, heaviest record to date.

 Splendid: Departments: The Essential Albums
Love is arguably The Cult's best album, but it's often overshadowed by the differences between it and the music on the band's breakthrough albums, Electric and Sonic Temple.
Each album's title is a propos -- Love is a gothic, psychedelic, melodic album, whereas the words "electric" and "sonic" are apt descriptions of the band's later work.
Even listeners who do not own (or have never heard) Love have undoubtedly heard "She Sells Sanctuary", the album's most popular cut -- it finds its way onto all the edgier eighties compilations, and lately seems to be licensed for a new TV commercial every few months.

Love, on the other hand, were already known for their intransigence; they wouldn't gig regularly, and rarely ventured outside their LA turf.
If Love were "hoods", however, they were psychedelic hoods; the tension between their flower child ethos and their punk roots was the source of their most compelling creations.
There was a dissonance to the album which spoke to the mental fragmentation of the drug culture from which it sprang.

The hard-rocking Cult have come along way from the early Native American stylings of Dreamtime and the dodgy goth tendencies evident on their classic album, Love.
Astbury was the son of a merchant navy man, which meant he moved frequently during his youth; at one point in his childhood, his family lived in Canada, where the young Ian became fascinated with native Americans, which would become a recurring theme in his songwriting.
Dreamtime, the group's first album, was released in the fall of 1984, accompanied by a single "Spiritwalker," which reached number one on the UK in the spring.

"Love" was the first stylistic change for the Cult and the band's breakthrough record in Europe, spawning a series of superb singles and being one of those albums that truthfully deserved the success it had (although in America, it would take another album before any real success manifested).
LOVE, alas, was to be the only such highlight in the group's career, but it was and remains an extremely bright one.

 TrouserPress.com :: Cult
The Cult story begins in early '83, as the Southern Death Cult (from Bradford, actually a northern city, near Leeds) has just broken up without releasing an album; various sessions and live takes were, however, compiled for a posthumous LP.
The closest the album comes to a stylistic groundbreaker — "Edie (Ciao Baby)," a pseudo-poetic tribute to Edie Sedgwick with strings and an acoustic guitar intro — is one of the stupidest songs in the Cult's lowbrow compositional closet.
A year after The Cult's release, Astbury and Duffy — having rebuilt their band from the sessionmen festival that was Ceremony — threw in the towel.

The album is twelve tracks of martyr-posing, passion-inciting, flag-waving rock put through the millennial blender, and it's entertaining as bloody hell.
This may be the first Cult album where the two polarities of Duffy (bleach-blond rough 'n' tumble axe-man) and Astbury (raven-haired rock mystic) aren't fighting for dominance, though saying they've found a middle ground would be implying a compromise.
This song should be a staple of all future Cult live shows as it is a certifiable rouser and captures perfectly the energy this band projects.

Agents of Fortune was co-produced by longtime Cult record boss Sandy Pearlman, Murray Krugman, and newcomer David Lucas, and in addition, the band's lyric writing was being done internally with help from poet-cum-rocker Patti Smith (who also sings on "The Revenge of Vera Gemini").
The album yielded the band's biggest single with "(Don't Fear) The Reaper," a multi-textured, deeply melodic soft rock song with psychedelic overtones, written by guitarist Donald "Buck Dharma" Roeser.
The rest of the album is ambitious in that it all but tosses aside the Cult's proto-metal stance and instead recontextualizes their entire stance.

ELECTRIC was the Cult's mainstream breakthrough album in the United States, where the UK band's previous records, DREAMTIME and LOVE, had been embraced by college radio.
After unsatisfying sessions with LOVE producer Steve Brown, the Cult hooked up with superstar hip-hop producer (and unapologetic 1970s-boogie fan) Rick Rubin to re-record the tracks, and his changes make the album.

The Cult: Back And Better Than Ever
Followed by Love and the single She Sells Sanctuary, the Cult gained an extensive following in the U.K. It was also a prerequisite for British bands of the early 1980s to adhere to certain fashion and trend perimeters, such as excessive use of eyeliner, brocade jackets and Ian and Billy were no exception.
On tunes like Love Removal Machine and Wildflower, they paid homage to the trippy metal of the late 1960s with a sense of humor - and the cover of Born To Be Wild, is heavier than the orginal.
The album was in cut out bins a few months after its' release, and on some American tour dates, more fans came to see their opening act, Lenny Kravitz, than the Cult.

CLUAS Indie Album Reviews: The Magnetic Fields 'i'
Scaling back on the grand ambitions of the previous Fields album - the cult classic '69 Love Songs' - Merritt's new album 'i' offers more wry observations on love, the only time where history is written by the losers.
His previous Fields work, '69 Love Songs', was a sprawling 3-disc kaleidoscope of dizzying eclecticism and fast-acting pop thrills, a bona fide classic whose stature will grow with the years.
If 'songwriting' for you means dishevelled Dylan fans shouting their angsty poetry while bashing an acoustic guitar, or if 'pop' means Busted or any of the litany of ringtone-muppets blocking up Saturday morning TV while you wait for 'Football Focus', then recommending 'i' as a masterclass in pop song writing may be the wrong tack.

The new project was called the Death Cult and after issuing an EP and a single (collected as "Ghost Dance"), shortened their name to The Cult, which is where this set picks up.

Cloud Cult: Aurora Borealis - PopMatters Music Review
If the Beach Boys' lost Smile album, which Brian Wilson recently performed live, was a "teenage symphony to God", then Cloud Cult's Aurora Borealis is a grown-up symphony to the departed soul of a two-year-old child.
While many of 2004's most-buzzed-about indie-rock albums are merely exercises in a trendy genre (from the endless garage-rock revival to the unremarkable post-post-punk of Franz Ferdinand), Cloud Cult displays the breadth of an iconic band to whom Franz Ferdinand is inexplicably compared, Blur.
But the rest of the album's 14 tracks touch on the atmospheric, the avant-garde, acoustic ballads, audio sample-based collage, and even politics.

Best of Rare Cult, as the title implies, draws from this box set and adds yet another four tracks to complete a fifteen-track "appetizer" CD which is, as the promotional material states, "an album in it's own right".
The box set must be aimed at die-hard fans and that means that this CD can only be for i) die-hard fans on a budget; ii) die-hard fans who want the four tracks on this CD which are not included in the box set.
Unlike Astbury's recent solo album, Spirit/Light/Speed, his vocal powers are well demonstrated on this compilation.
