It is a testament to Presley's star power that the title of his 1956 debut was changed from The Reno Brothers to Love Me Tender in deference to the popularity of the song, one of four performed in the movie.
The movie Siegel and Presley made together was Flaming Star, a Western that cast Presley as a troubled half-white, half-Kiowa Indian who finds himself caught in the middle when a land war between the two groups breaks out.
Love Me Tender, Flaming Star, and Wild in the Country were all shot in Cinemascope, and Fox Home Video does all three films justice in their anamorphic widescreen presentations.

It's fascinating to watch Love Me Tender (and Flaming Star, for that matter) and realize that we are witnessing Elvis confront the same dead-end as the young Alexander the Great -- he had conquered the world and he eagerly sought a new challenge.

When Elvis sings “Love Me Tender” on the porch with the entire family (minus Pa, who's dead and buried), there's a lot of smoldering glances going around the loosely-formed circle, making for one confused critic.
The ending is not a surprise, though the changed lyric to “Love Me Tender” is. I believe it's only here that one hears the added verse “If my dreams could all come true/ darling this I know/ happiness will follow you/ everywhere you go”.

I don't claim to be a follower of his movies either, but this one is a western and I AM a follower of westerns and Civil War movies and this passes well.
The movie is more than passable (should likely be 3 3/4 stars vs 4's) and the acting is pretty good and the story moves along well.
Sinatra was able to pull off movies that were seperate from his singing, (although he did a fair amount of "singing" movies.) its a shame Elvis never got that chance.

Love Me Tender starts out quite successfully with a Confederate hijack of a Union payroll train.
William Campbell and James Drury are fine as the brothers, though Neville Brand is somewhat uncomfortable as one of Confederate raiders, mainly because it's a poorly drawn role.
