  DVD Review: Love Stinks
The film has the feel of a "sitcom" as well; the humor, the acting, even the direction and cinematography scream "sitcom".
Occasionally, "Love Stinks" throws out a funny line or situation, but overall, I couldn't help feeling like I was watching a weak sitcom.
I'm not sure what kind of sound the film contained when it was released for a 2 week run in theaters, but the sound on this DVD is pretty dissapointing.

"Love Stinks" next takes a detour into terrain right out of 1989's infinitely more sophisticated dark comedy "War of the Roses," as the two quarreling lovers utilize lawyers and a variety of dirty tricks in an effort to destroy one another, emotionally if not physically.
"Love Stinks" is filled out with an occasionally funny subplot about a sitcom that begins to reflect Seth's personal life, and some brief, winning performances by small-screen types Steve Hytner ("Seinfeld"), Jason Bateman ("Chicago Sons") and Tiffani-Amber Thiessen ("Beverly Hills, 90210").

A hateful little number that pretends to possess insight into modern mating rituals, the film is basically an excuse for someone — our guess would be writer-director Jeff Franklin — to work out rage against women.
But despite the movie's profound drawbacks, Stewart, Wilson and Bellamy give the material all the commitment and comic zest they can muster, and however unappetizing this rancorous battle of the sexes gets, at least it sticks to its guns and never goes soft-hearted.

SPLICEDwire | "Love Stinks" review (1999)
The most laughable thing about "Love Stinks" -- a romance- gone- wrong comedy featuring a sitcom writer trying to break up with his deranged girlfriend -- is that nobody in the movie thinks the plot is funny.
In theory, this could be rich comedic material, but "Love Stinks" expects us to sympathize with Stewart when he's too thick to see this fate coming.
Almost enjoyable until this twist of fate, the picture suddenly changes tone and takes a failed stab at a low-brow rehash of the ugly divorce dark comedy "War of the Roses." Wilson files a palimony suit, but refuses to move out, and the former couple try to make each other's lives a living hell.
