lovehatetragedy (set for release june 18, 2002, on dreamworks records) heralds the refining and refocusing of their sound as they shed some of their identification with rock-rap fusion and strip down to a purer, but equally high-impact rock attack.
for lovehatetragedy, shaddix conjured a kaleidoscope of lyrical conceits, stretching himself from subtle metaphors ("singular indestructible droid" - in band shorthand, "sid") to the brutally honest meditations that have bonded him to so many listeners wrestling with the same uncertainties ("decompression period").
lovehatetragedy may well be the edgiest papa roach album to date, the band's of-the-moment musical promise to rock as hard as they can.

Papa Roach have found on their second album, lovehatetragedy, that isolation and loneliness come back to haunt you no matter where you are in life.
They confronted their bug-like demons on debut Infest, beating them back with cathartic spray, and were ready to move on--until they found that fame has brought them an entirely different swarm of messed-up feelings, which now need to be exorcised.
When Infest came out in 2000, the radio waves were filled by one song called Last Resort, and Papa Roach had broke the mainstream and made a must-have metal album, selling over a million albums, going platinum.

LoveHateTragedy is their second album, and it shows a definite shift in style from nu-metal to an almost modern punk rock style.
LoveHateTragedy is just a straight-ahead rock record, it’s full of short sharp noisy songs, with big choruses, crunching guitars and taut drumming.
Their second album, LoveHateTragedy was released in 2002 and saw the band move away from the Nu-Metal sound towards a more straightforward modern rock style.

Plan 9 - Papa Roach : Lovehatetragedy [PA]   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
On the follow-up to their major label debut Infest, Papa Roach expands the parameters of the aggro-rock blueprint they've drawn up by consciously putting their more overt hip-hop influences to the side.
Writing most of LOVEHATETRAGEDY on the road while touring as part of Ozzfest 2001 gave main lyricist/vocalist Jacoby Shaddix (the artist formerly known as Coby Dick) plenty of time to reflect over relationships with his band, significant other, himself, and the world.
Pouring his energies into singing rather than rapping (with the exception of the groove-driven "She Love Me Not"), Shaddix addresses depression (the murky "Black Clouds"), the enormity of 9/11 (the melodic title track) and existentialism (the thunderous "Life Is A Bullet").

Papa Roach's "lovehatetradgedy" CD review on AudioRevolution.com
Papa Roach is back for their second go-round with an album titled lovehatetragedy, the follow-up to their multi-platinum debut album Infest.
The depth of the songwriting on lovehatetragedy has been stepped up a notch over Infest and the band has a new level of confidence from over two years of touring.
However my favorite track on lovehatetragedy is the song that rocks the least of all.

It seems, though, that for their second album, Papa Roach sensed this and made a concerted effort to move away from rap rock and head more into a straight ahead hard rock area.
The good news is that lovehatetragedy is an infinitely better album than 2000's Infest.
They aren't very good, but radio plays them because it's the current flavor, even if it is in it's last legs.

Papa Roach: lovehatetragedy - PopMatters Music Review
My favorite song on Papa Roach's new album, lovehatetragedy is "Walking Thru Barbed Wire", about the death of singer, Jacoby Shaddix's dog.
After falling into the same category as Korn and Limp Bizkit for so long, "P-Roach" are beginning to come into their own, stripping down a lot of the gloss of Infest (which surely came from the excitement of it being their first major label release) returning to their rock's roots.
lovehatetragedy is not the definitive work of Papa Roach's career by any means, and it's probably not going to be anywhere near as successful as Infest, but it's a hard-hitting, funked-up step in the right direction.

Jacoby Shaddix (the vocalist formerly known as Coby Dick) gives an impressive performance, and while he might not have the power of most of his contemporaries, he makes up for it with his more melodic approach, even within his raps.
With the exception of the last verse of "she loves me not," there is virtually no rapping at all.
Believe it or not, I didn't think Papa Roach's major label debut "Infest" was half bad, but "Lovehatetragedy" is nothing but the same 'ol uninspired, repetitive, untalented, downtuned guitars, and lame lyrics that we're so used to by now with the nu-metal scene.

Lovehatetragedy finds the Roach shifting back toward straight-ahead rock 'n' roll, and in that sense they succeed.
At the very least, this album solidifies Papa Roach as a candidate for a future "Remember Them?" summer rock tour like the ones we see now.
Maybe then lovehatetragedy will be ready to get dusted off and given another listen.

It's hard to deny Papa Roach have a certain knack of crafting big, glossy, annoyingly catchy anthems for the Kerrang TV generation.
LoveHateTragedy is a compendium of modern rock styles, glued together by Papa Roach's exuberance and Shaddix's outsized persona.
Papa Roach's LoveHateTragedy is complete garbage, and if you compare it to the absolute zenith of the genre, RATM's self-titled, this album is laughable.

One minute and thirty-four seconds into their new album, Papa Roach singer Jacoby Shaddix screams, "I'm ready to die for rock and roll!" So now you know where he stands.
Where the band's last album showed some timely influences from Rage Against the Machine, Lovehatetragedy is full of more classic, timeless stylings.
The self-determination mantra "Born With Nothing, Die With Everything," for instance, buckles and shreds until it accomplishes what all hard music aspires to: It sounds like a day at the sheet-metal shop.

Jenny Eliscu of Rolling Stone spoke with Jacoby Shaddix of Papa Roach about the band's new album 'Lovehatetragedy' due out June 18th.
Shaddix said, "This is Papa Roach's rock & roll record.
We consciously wrote an aggressive record, and that's how we want to come -- like a one-two punch." Shaddix adds the band's willingness to try new sounds was a direct result of writing on the road.

"Singular Indestructible Droid" emphasizes that people are spiritual beings in fleshly "cages." Mourning the events of 9-11, lead singer Jacoby Shaddix is saddened by _ate and destruction, deciding "I believe in love/ I believe in forever" ("Lovehatetragedy").
Elsewhere on the disc, Shaddix claims to be filthy, horny, nasty, paranoid, selfish, demented, sick and twisted.
Apparently given its title by the same pause-impaired person who named TLC’s Crazysexycool and Danzig’s Thrall:Demonsweatlive, Lovehatetragedy features tortured souls unleashing their angst on the public.

Papa Roach frontman Jacoby Shaddix (the once-abbreviated Coby Dick) could probably stand some marriage counseling from the still-smitten Ozzy and Sharon Osbourne, who hired Papa Roach as headliners for last year's Ozzfest.
At least two songs on the band's second major-label album, lovehatetragedy, find Shaddix bitching and bemoaning -- his wife doesn't understand him, things are testy between them, and life in general blows.
He's even gone so far as to make one of these cuts, the bludgeoning ''She Loves Me Not,'' the first single.
