When I heard MBV's album "Loveless" for the first time, it was an extremely questionable listen for me. I didn't understand why vocals were there when you couldn't tell what the hell it was saying.
Loveless is overwhelming, with Shields and Bilinda Butcher's guitars and voices blending into each other until they become a distant orchestra, the rhythm section striding in majestic lockstep, and occasional bursts of dance rhythms (as on the single "Soon") buoying the live instruments' warp and drift.

To simply call this album the apotheosis of the shoegazing scene--that brief epoch of U.K. indie-rock in which bands turned away from melodic clarity and instead chased after the incendiary rapture of sheer guitar-driven noise--would be an understatement.

The variation in songs is what makes Loveless work as well as it does for, despite writing of how Loomer, for example, becomes subsumed by its backing, others, like When You Sleep and What You Want are rich pop songs, both of which are immediately appealing.

 Fugazi Album Reviews
Fugazi show their funky side on "Cashout" and "Oh," similar wailing guitar tones the likes of which I've never heard before on a Fugazi album appear on "Ex-Spectator" and "Argument," and "Oh" even has a Zep-ish guitar interjection.
Fortunately, Fugazi often surge with a spectacular wall of sound (I think they'd been listening to Loveless as well as wearing out Sonic Youth's SST records), and as usual the lyrics are really interesting and slighly offbeat (songs starring John Cassavetes and Christoper Walken, for example).
The album is also notable for its many stops and starts, as you'll often think a song is over before it abruptly begins again, sometimes from a vastly different place (I pity anybody trying to review this album from a tape).
