Lovis Corinth, one of the major German artists of the 20th century, was born an entire generation earlier than many artists who are now considered his contemporaries.
Corinth began his career in the realist tradition in the 1880's, but he was soon at the vanguard of change.
Towards the latter part of his career, Corinth's work clearly reflects his reactions to his own illness and to World War I. Objects are caught up in a play of broad, energetic brush strokes, the paste-like layers of paint applied in sweeping, parallel movements to produce the characteristic hatching that became his hallmark.

 Lovis Corinth
Lovis Corinth (1858-1925) was born a generation earlier than artists considered his contemporaries.
Corinth was influenced by various artists - among them Rubens, Millet, Rembrandt, Jongkind and Manet - and finally by Expressionism.
As Hitler rose to power (1933), Corinth's works were left undisturbed but for those works executed after his stroke which were considered "Degenerate." Corinth stands as a transitional figure between Impressionism, which he began to transcend at the time of his death, and Expressionism, which he did not altogether achieve.

Lovis Corinth [was] one of many Germans who joined the international throng at the Académie Julian, where Bastien-Lepage was revered and his methods taught.
Certainly Corinth's nudes, as in The Temptation of St Anthony (1897, Munich, Neue Pinakothek) and Bacchanal (1899, Gelsenkirchen, Städtisches Museum), were a long way from those of Anders Zorn, though always striking and inclined to cling to the memory (as were the erotic pictures he did for private sale and circulation).

 I, Lovis Corinth. The self-portraits
Rooted in nineteenth-century realism, Corinth evolved his painting over four decades to achieve a degree of autonomy that sets him apart from traditional forms of representation.
Barely another artist of his time was quite so preoccupied with self-portraiture in painting and drawing as Lovis Corinth.
It is precisely in this examination of himself that he documented the changes occurring within his art: he charts a journey from a confidently posing artist (frequently accompanied by a female model as his counterpart) to an ailing recluse.
