Maldives - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Maldives, officially the Republic of Maldives, is an island nation consisting of a group of atolls in the Indian Ocean, south of Lakshadweep group of islands of India, about seven hundred kilometers (435 mi) south-west of Sri Lanka.
The twenty-six atolls encompass a territory featuring 1,192 islets, roughly two hundred of which are inhabited by people.
Despite this, the archipelago's low lying nature (one of the lowest lying countries on Earth) meant that nearly all of the country was swamped.

A tale of two rhythms: a comparative review of the pulsatile endocrine systems regulating insulin and GnRH secretion
Islets of Langerhans are micro-organs that constitute the endocrine portion of the mammalian pancreas and are responsible for regulating blood glucose and body energy metabolism (20).
Islets vary in size and shape, and possess their own microvasculature to rapidly carry insulin and other secreted factors out of the islet, as well as to receive nutrients and regulatory factors (21, 22).
Low frequency islet oscillations have also been shown to closely correlate with oscillations in insulin secretion in vitro (50-52) and in vivo (63), suggesting that islet oscillations are indeed important to physiological insulin secretion.

 Rakahanga Island
Most of these islets are rather thickly covered with vegetation: groves of coconut palms, the remains of former native forest, and excavated or natural low, swampy places planted to a kind of taro called puraka (Cyrtosperma).
The small islet of Te Kainga was the site of the original village on Rakahanga, the other islets being used to grow a food supply.
When this islet was outgrown, the village was moved to the larger adjoining islet to the south.

Darwin, Coral reefs chapter 1   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-25)
The accompanying woodcut represents a vertical section, supposed to be drawn at low water from the outer coast across one of the low islets (one being taken of average dimensions) to within the lagoon.
islets on the leeward side of atolls, or when present their lesser dimensions compared with those to windward, is a comparatively unimportant fact; but in several instances the reef itself on the leeward side, retaining its usual defined outline, does not rise to the surface by several fathoms.
That the formation of the islets is due to detritus thrown up from the outside, as in the ordinary manner, and not from the interior of the lagoons, may, I think, be safely inferred from several considerations, which it is hardly worth while to detail.

Darwin, Coral reefs Appendix   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-25)
The breadth of the islets on the reef is unusually great, and the sea near it does not deepen so suddenly as is generally the case.
On one side of the islet of Kohaihai there is a bank of sand and coral with five feet water on it, running parallel to the shore, and leaving a channel of about fifteen feet deep within.
Hence it is easy to understand the origin of the low land on the coasts, where sediment is now accumulating; for instance, on the northern part of Yucutan, and on the N. part of Mosquito, where the land is low, and where extensive banks appear to be in progressive formation.

I believe that the questions of whether sovereignty over an islet or a low-tide elevation may be acquired through appropriation by a State and how such features can affect the extent of the territorial sea or the boundary of the territorial sea remain open matters.
This is necessary because in the present case the islets and low-tide elevations are really the most crucial points, leaving aside the matter of sovereignty over the Hawar Islands, in determining the maritime boundary.
The extension of the breadth of the territorial sea to 12 miles would have resulted in a radical change in the context of the concepts of low-tide elevation, island and islet, straight baselines, etc., which were introduced in 1958 to reflect customary international law at that time.

Many of these islets are so low that they can become completely washed over with the smallest change in tide or currents through the various seasons of the year.
These different islets that make up the atoll are branches that channel the fresh water inward to lagoon lakes, like veins in a body.
The types of native plant species that grow here are the `akulikuli, which covers the jagged coral surface like a soft carpet; the `alina, which is a low lying shrub that has beautiful small white flowers; and the nohu, which is a hearty indigenous shrub that seems to tolerate the most difficult of environments.

Low GTF chromium levels are a major determinant of Insulin insensitivity, and obesity is yet another significant factor; onset is generally diet related and usually occurs later in life.
