The launch of the airline, less than 20 months after Qantas' now profitable low-cost international carrier took to the skies, is likely to spark a fare war and test the market's ability to sustain three airlines following the collapse of second-ranked carrier Ansett in 2001.
The new, independently-run airline would have a minimum of 23 aircraft after a year of operation and was likely to prove profitable "reasonably quickly," but Qantas refused to detail the cost of the carrier, its route network, or its name.
Qantas, which first raised the prospect of the new airline in August, is now negotiating with Boeing, Airbus and aircraft lessors to acquire at least 23 Boeing 737-800 or A320 planes for the venture by mid-2005.

Mexico's state-owned airline holding company, Cintra, will re-launch Aerocaribe as a low-cost carrier in May as part of its plan to sell off Aeromexico and Mexicana de Aviacion.
