In terms of the number of people killed every winter, Lowari Top, which is 10,200 feet high, must be one of the most dangerous mountain passes in the world.
Shandur Top, which is 12,000 feet high, is much less dangerous, because the surrounding area is flat and the danger of an avalanche is less.
In February, the snow starts to melt and there are often avalanches, frequently resulting in the loss of human life.

The only road link presently available between Chitral valley and other parts of Pakistan is through Lowari Pass, which is 3200 meters i-e 10500 feet above MSL.
This route is not an all weather road especially during the winter when the Pass remains closed due to heavy snowfall for about 4 to 6 months.
The Lowari Tunnel Project had, therefore, remained a dream of the residents of the Chitral Valley for the last 50 years.
