The Downeaster is a passenger railway line operated by Amtrak, connecting North Station in Boston, Massachusetts to Portland, Maine.
Amtrak uses the MBTA 's Lowell Line from North Station to Wilmington Station, the Wildcat Branch to Wilmington Junction, and the Haverhill/Reading Line to Haverhill Station.
These were all part of the Boston and Maine Railroad - the part south of Wilmington Junction was once the main line and a branch of the Boston and Lowell Railroad, and the rest was the main line of the BandM.

After a 20-year lease to the Nashua and Lowell expired in 1893, the Peterboro was leased to the Boston and Lowell for 93 years, the lease being assigned to the Boston and Maine on May 18, 1895.
This line was built with the understanding that it would be operated only when horse races, athletic contests, fairs or other events were being held on the driving park grounds and formal authority to suspend service at other times was granted by the Railroad Commissioners on Jan. 29, 1900.
