Cretaceous - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Cretaceous Period is one of the major divisions of the geologic timescale, reaching from the end of the Jurassic Period (i.e.
The Cretaceous (from Latin creta meaning 'chalk') was named for the extensive beds of chalk (calcium carbonate deposited by the shells of marine invertebrates), found in the upper Cretaceous of Great Britain (including the White Cliffs of Dover) and adjacent continental Europe.
Pterosaurs were common in the early and middle Cretaceous, but as the Cretaceous proceeded faced growing competition from the adaptive radiation of birds, and by the end of the period only two highly specialised families remained.

At the beginning of the Lower Cretaceous in North America, the Mexican Sea of the late Jurassic period spread over Texas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, and parts of Arizona, Kansas, and Colorado.
Near the end of the Upper Cretaceous, conditions in the west were similar to those of the Carboniferous period in other regions; swamps and bogs were formed that later became valuable deposits of coal.
The Lower Cretaceous is characterized by a revolution in the plant life, with the sudden appearance of flowering plants (angiosperms) such as the ancestors of the beech, fig, magnolia, and sassafras.

 Cretaceous Fauna of Rufe Snow
The Cretaceous Period began in Texas with seas advancing upon the Wichita Paleoplain from the south and east.
The southern extent of the Cretaceous in the state is marked by limestone of reef origin containing rudistids, corals, and sponges.
The diminutive nature of the fauna found only in the lower clay facies may indicate that during rapid deposition, the environment in which these animals found themselves was relatively stagnant, was cloudy with silt, water circulation was restricted, and oxygen levels were low.

During the Late Jurassic and Cretaceous, regional subsidence of the Gulf of Mexico basin resulted in the deposition of an arcuate prism of sediments that thickens from a few hundred feet updip to more than 10,000 feet along the ancient shelf margin 100 to 300 miles downdip (McFarlan, 1977).
During most of the early Cretaceous, a ridge complex of biogenic reefs, banks, tidal bars, channel fills, and islands existed on the shelf edge that separated the shallow-water interior of Texas from the deeper-water Gulf of Mexico basin.

Early Cretaceous - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Early Cretaceous (timestratigraphic name) or the Lower Cretaceous (logstratigraphic name), is the earlier of the two major divisions of the Cretaceous Period.
During this time many new types of dinosaurs appeared or came into prominence, including the Psittacosaurs, Spinosaurs and Coelurosaurs, while other survivors from the Late Jurassic continued.
In the seas, the ichthyosaurs declined and eventually died out at the start of the Late Cretaceous.

Purbecks - Durlston Bay, England - Part 3: Lower Purbeck
The lower and main part of the Broken Beds at Durlston Bay consist of calcitised evaporites, often very porous and with some celestite, an insoluble residue of evaporite diagenesis.
The geological situation of this locality can be quite well understood by considering the proximity to the cliff, the relationship to the strata, the relationship to the structures, and also, incidently, by referring to the old account of the Mammal Pit.
At the foot of the cliffs are the Lower Purbeck marls and limestones containing interesting evaporitic beds with gypsum.

This paper, however, presents the results of one aspect of the work, on the Cretaceous Stratigraphy of Offshore Kuwait, which has no confidentiality implications and which, it is hoped, may be of interest to the wider community.
Consistent with its equatorial location throughout the Cretaceous, and the low-relief nature of the Arabian margin, the Cretaceous succession in Offshore Kuwait is dominated by carbonates, generally mud-supported (Figure 6).
The Lower Cretaceous sequence of Kuwait ranges in thickness from 3,800 ft to 4,400 ft (Figure 11), becoming thicker to the north-northeast as the Mesopotamian trough is approached.

In the region of the western Istrian anticline, erosional remains of the transgressive Eocene Foraminiferal limestones overly shallow-water deposits of Early Cretaceous age (Valanginian, Hauterivian and Barremian).
Contrary to the traditional connection between the formation of the western Istrian anticline and the Laramian tectonic phase at the end of the Cretaceous (Maastrichtian), new investigations suggest sporadic tectonic movements (with constant tectonic coordinate orientation) from the Hauterivian to the end of the Cretaceous.
With these movements, formation of the anticline structure began in the Early Cretaceous, with the emerged apical parts representing land areas throughout most of the Cretaceous.

Cycads: from the upper Jurassic and lower cretaceous rocks of Southeastern Utah
In the last seventy years, beautiful cycad specimens have been recovered from the Cretaceous of Patagonia, Argentina, and from the Jurassic and Cretaceous of southeastern Utah.
Unfortunately, many of the cycads from either Cretaceous- or Jurassic-age rocks are heavily fractured or even shattered, and great care must be exercised when collecting and preparing them.
