This Gothic Revival former Baptist church was built in 1850, and purchased in 1885 by the oldest Russian Jewish Orthodox congregation in America.
A fire on the afternoon of Dec. 6, 2001, severely damaged the roof, ceiling, mural paintings and decorative plasterwork of Beth Hamedrash Hagadol, one of the oldest and most beautiful of the Lower East Side's 19th century synagogues.
Built in 1849-1850, this is the oldest surviving building in New York City built specifically as a synagogue, and the first synagogue structure built on the Lower East Side.

The reason is because of the reference to a 'side', in this case the side of the island of Manhattan.
Sides are 2-dimentional and therefore you cannot be 'in' a side, only 'on' it.

The Lower East Side is a composite neighborhood of the New York City borough of Manhattan which consists of the neighborhoods of the East Village, LoHo, Chinatown, Little Italy, Tompkins Square Park; Astor Place; and the housing development known as "Knickerbocker Village" at Corlears Hook.
The Lower East side is bordered in the south and west by Chinatown (which extends north to roughly Broome Street), in the west by NoLIta and in the north by East Village.
East Village was once Lower East Side's northwest corner alongside Greenwich Village; it received that name from real estate developers in the 1980s trying to dissociate the area from the Lower East Side's reputation.

A young mugger who shot aspiring actress and playwright Nicole duFresne to death while robbing her on a Manhattan street was sentenced Monday to life in prison without the possibility of parole plus 30 years.
Rudy Fleming, 21, was sentenced on his Oct. 12 conviction of first-degree murder in the death on Jan. 27, 2005, of the Minnesota native during the gunpoint holdup of her and three of her friends on the Lower East Side.
DuFresne, 28, a native of Wayzata, Minn., was living in Brooklyn and working as a bartender on the Lower East Side when she was killed by Fleming while he and some of his six companions robbed her and her friends around 3 a.m.
