The Lower Swatara Volunteer Fire Department was conceived in the minds of several civic minded township residents during the early months of 1956.
In September 1971 the Lower Swatara Ambulance Association was organized and authorized to operate under the Fire Department charter and to house their ambulance in the firehouse.
The offer was accepted and with a new paint job and minor repairs, Lower Swatara was now owner of a serviceable 1963 Ford Econoline truck which was used to carry the portable pump, portable generator and light, various other equipment and was also used as a personnel carrier.

The word is thought to be from an Iroquois Indian word meaning "Where we fed on eels." Swatara Township is comprised of 14.6 square miles, equivalent to 9,344 acres.
Swatara Township is governed by a nine-member Board of Commissioners.

As part of the River Conservation Plan for the Swatara Creek watershed, it was determined that the information concerning the Swatara Creek Greenway plans as well as their management options would be incorporated into the plan document.
The Greenway plan prepared for the Hershey Trust on the northern Dauphin County section of Swatara Creek, served as the impetus for the County’s plan on the lower Swatara Creek stream corridor.
A petition for formal inclusion of the plan on the Pennsylvania Rivers Registry was submitted to the state in September 1999.

Agriculture, the second leading source of pollution to Pennsylvania's rivers and streams, is also contributing to the degradation of the Chesapeake Bay's famed shellfish and fish stocks through Pennsylvania's tributaries.
Pennsylvania has agreed with other states in the Chesapeake Bay watershed to reduce the levels of nitrogen and phosphorus entering the Susquehanna River (which is the largest tributary to the Chesapeake Bay) by 40 percent by the year 2000.
So far, Codorus Township in York County has ordinances in place, and Wayne Township in Mifflin County and Swatara Township in Lebanon County are in the process of drawing up their ordinances.

The Swatara Creek Water Trail is a 42-mile segment of Swatara Creek from Jonestown, Lebanon County, to the PA Fish and Boat Commission's Middletown Access, in Middletown, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania.

The Swatara Township Police Department is seeking information on an armed robbery that occurred the evening of December 16, 2006 at the 7-Eleven convenience store in the 4800 block of Derry Street.
Swatara Township Police Officers quickly responded to an alarm at the location, which was apparently activated by the burglar.
As Swatara Police units converged on the area a white Pontiac Grand Am which had been used in the first robbery of the bank was observed by the Chief of Police David D. Bogdanovic westbound in the 4700 block of Chambers Hill Road.

Pupils attending nonpublic schools within the ten (10)-mile zone and within the Central Dauphin School District will be evacuated to Central Dauphin Middle School, as directed by their respective school official.
Central Dauphin Middle School pupils will be transported home and walkers released, enabling the facility to be utilized as a host school for pupils beings evacuated from the ten (10)-mile zone.
