  Lower West Side
The Lower West Side has traditionally served as a point of entry to Chicago for working-class immigrants from a broad range of ethnic groups.
The area is bounded on the south and east by the Chicago River, and on the north and west by the Burlington Northern railroad tracks.
The oldest sector was settled predominantly by Bohemians displaced by the Chicago Fire of 1871 and was dubbed “Pilsen”; after one of the largest cities in their homeland.

Historically, the West Side was divided by steep river bluffs into distinct neighborhoods -- the Upper West Side on top of the bluffs, and the Lower West Side or Flats, an area in the northeast portion of the district along the river.
Early settlement of the low lying portion of the West Side was discouraged by frequent devastating flooding of the Mississippi River.
West Side commercial buildings were originally concentrated along routes ascending the bluffs, such as Ohio Street, and along streetcar lines such as Robert, Concord, Fairfield, Dakota, and Stryker.

In the 1860s, the first suburb of Riverside was found 9 miles west of downtown (Spinney, 83), and a ring of parks along the outskirts of Chicago inticed the wealthy to move from the downtown area, especially on the North Side, where geography was not as ideal for gridded planning (Duis, 69 - 70).
Most of the buildings in Chicago, both large mansions and small immigrant shacks, were made of wood, close to or touching other buildings, and roofed with flammable tar and pine (Spinney, 99).
There were three Swedish communities in Chicago by 1880: Swede Town, located on the near North Side, one on the near West side and another on the near South side.
