Spring Garden Music -- Jack's Essays
Psychologically, this music is cool and feminine, in contrast to the hot and masculine free jazz and “energy music”; in fact, it has arisen partly as the antipode to its predecessor.
Yet with lowercase music, technical virtuosity is severely limited in favor of musical judgment, which is quite subjective; one easily produced, ordinary sound might suffice, repeated several times in the piece.
Lowercase music might go against the grain of many improvisers, yet there is a certain attraction for what seems to go against us, for that very conflict.

 lowercase
Minimalist artist Steve Roden coined the term "lowercase" to describe a particular style of music he was making a few years ago.
Well, a lot of listeners have discovered this music, and many more critics have taken to the concept of "lowercase" music as a way to describe the kinds of ethereal, abstract recordings that make up the bulk of the releases on such esteemed labels as Line, 3 Particles, and Trente Oiseaux.
I'm not really sure whether Roden is pleased that his attitude is now a genre, but at least he can take solace in the fact that most of the actual musicians who create so-called "lowercase" music do it not to copy Roden but to further their own aesthetic designs.

Originally coined by minimal artist Steve Roden, "lowercase" is an extreme form of ambient minimalism in which very quiet sounds bookend long stretches of silence.
Many artists have contributed to the lowercase movement, including electronic music pioneer and educator Kim Cascone, Tetsu Inoue and Bernhard Gunter.
Some of the labels that publish lowercase music include Trente Oiseaux, 12k and raster-noton which features famed composer Ryuichi Sakamoto in collaboration with Carsten Nicolai, a.k.a.

I have avoided using the term 'music', rather most of the pieces are soundscapes or soundsculptures which are not interested in the norms of music: there is very little melody, regular rhythm, development.

If it’s instructive to acknowledge the ego-light, content-evasive intent of the music in order to find a way to approach it, it’s also important to note that there is a well-defined community of auteurs working with the authority, virtuosity, and strength of style of any modern composer—there are conventions.
For many, lowercase became as liberating a statement as punk, particularly for those with no particular interest in or training in the harmonic techniques, referential games, anti-hero antics, or genius-fetish of western music.
So lowercase landed unexpectedly on my life like a subatomic bomb during a period of time where I was such a miserable fucking emotional and physical mess that the circumstances of my life had temporarily robbed me of my ability to hear the music I loved.

One of the consequences of listening to lowercase's use of silence is that the ear tunes in to what is normally filtered out as "background"; after a quarter of a century of so-called ambient music, it's now time for ambient noise.
It’s thrilling, sensuous music – not least because of the fevered odd-meter grooves that set the head nodding even when you haven’t the faintest where “one” is – but it’s also unsettling and a little bruising.
This is without doubt difficult and demanding music that demands repeated close listening in favorable circumstances and may well prove wholly inaccessible to many, but it is well worth expending some time and attention on, for it holds out to the sympathetic listener a rewarding intricacy of improvised passages with which to engage.

 Bagatellen: Opinion: What Is EAI?
As much of the music reviewed here recently seems to fall into what I understand the category to be, I think it might be appropriate to examine the term in some detail, with a view to clarifying the issues and stimulating subsequent discussion.
But musically, in terms of the kind of sounds created and their nature and disposition in the structure of the music itself, these supposedly "eai" and "non-eai" outings are extremely close.
The term isn't very useful in music either, since it misreads the spareness of the sounds as a "lack" rather than as a "presence." In other words, the term "reductionism" in music always implies there was something to be "reduced" to begin with.

After gestating in cassette culture and other obscure musical inlets, four genres finally flowered: noise, plunderphonics, field recordings, and lowercase sound.
Coined by sound artist Steve Roden, lowercase sound refers to works that employ discreet (often negligible but carefully calibrated) volume and minimal sonic materials such as sine tones, clicks, rustling, or lo-fi sonic detritus.
Unlike beat-driven pop music that cuts through the noise of daily life, this music sometimes incorporates, augments, and integrates the surrounding sonic environment into a kind of co-composition with what you're hearing in the world right now.
