The reason that these three States named their counties LOWNDES was not only because of the greatness of the man but also because so many of the early settlers in these counties were from South Carolina.
Lowndes was elected to the lower House of the General Assembly of South Carolina retaining his seat until 1810 when he was chosen as a member of Congress and elected five times successively serving from 1811 to 1822.
On the morning of 11 April the LOWNDES was ordered to proceed to the transport area off Hagushi Beach on the west coast of Okinawa, and arrived there the next morning to be greeted by the worst air raid of the invasion.
