  Introduction
Robert Ficken’s analysis of the Loyal Legion is similar to Todes’ in that he believes the lumbermen, due to peculiar wartime conditions, were able to manipulate the government to serve their own self-interest.
Of the four men, Parker was the "chief architect" of the Legion and the one most responsible for the "overlay of social improvement" that was the Legion’s "primary goal." Parker believed wobblyism to be environmentally caused; until the bad working conditions of the timber industry were resolved, lumbermen would have to deal with labor unrest.
In Legion scholarship, timber workers have traditionally been portrayed as the lumbermen's victims; typical of this view is Tyler’s characterization of the "bitter and abnormal lives" of timber workers.

Loyal Legion - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States, also known by its acronym MOLLUS or simply as the Loyal Legion, is a United States military order dating back originally to the end of the Civil War.
In response, a group of officers who had fought in the Union Army formed the Loyal Legion as a society of officers who, having proven their loyalty in battle, pledged to defend the country.
The Order's fame was great enough to inspire John Philip Sousa to compose the Loyal Legion March in its honor in 1890.

 Loyal Legion - KS-Cyclopedia - 1912
Loyal Legion.—The official designation of this society is "Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States." On April 15, 1865, a few army officers met for the purpose of adopting resolutions relative to the death of President Lincoln.
At that meeting some one suggested a permanent organization of the commissioned officers who had served in the Union army during the war, and at another meeting on May 3, 1865, the Loyal Legion was launched.
The objects of the Loyal Legion are to promote good fellowship among the officers who served in the army and navy in the Civil war and to preserve historical information regarding that great conflict.

 mickelson - loggers lumbermen
Second, Part II will analyze how and why the Loyal Legion of Loggers and Lumber was able to draw the majority of lumbermen and loggers to work together for the common good of both the loggers and lumbermen in serving the United States.
Part of his strategy was to bring all sides together in one group and to not use the word ‘union.’ He hoped the title, "Loyal Legion of Loggers and Lumbermen" would be an organization everyone could rally behind in a spirit of patriotism for the general welfare of the United States.
The legion said concerning the eight-hour-day, "What’s the difference, so long as the 4-L is keeping it?" Whether it was recreational or had to do with salary, the communication between logger and lumbermen helped prevent many unnecessary disturbances and work stoppages.

Byrd was so afraid of mutiny that he wanted to make sure that he had a corps of people who were loyal to him.
So I think on the basis of his Masonic background, he was a member of the Mason's fraternal order, I think he used that as a model to form his own secret society down there that he called the Loyal Legion, the people incredibly loyal to him.
