In the second juan, where Kuang Lu describes the mountains and rivers, the grottos and cliffs, the ponds, springs and wells of the area, the landscape, the very strangeness of which is marked by the names of the sites, is nonetheless naturalised in certain ways.
Although Kuang Lu died a martyr to the cause of the Ming when our great army took Canton, his qin clutched to his breast, during the last years of that dynasty he received patronage from Ruan Dacheng and was on most familiar terms with this man and served him longer than anyone else.
In contemporary notices of the work, Kuang Lu's poetic style is said to be that of the Chu ci (Songs of the South), an alternative Southern lineage of Chinese poetry that had traditionally been associated with the power of shamans and spirits and "lewd religious rites".

thezensite:The Disputed Place of "a special transmission"
The connection of the phrase "a special transmission outside the scriptures" with the Lin-chi lu (Record of Lin-chi) is highly suggestive, however, of a Ch'an identity that developed in the Lin-chi lineage during the Sung.
While the Lin-chi lu professes to be the record of Lin-chi's words and deeds as recorded by his disciples, the current form of the text dates from an edition issued in 1120.
According to the T'ien-sheng kuang-teng lu, the interpretation of Ch'an as a "special transmission outside the scriptures" was not the innovation of Bodhidharma or Lin-chi, as later tradition would suggest.

They were quick to note when Kuang’s fanciful assertions did not mesh with their on-site investigations.
Kuang was a Ming martyr, though a problematic one because of his association with the maligned "eunuch clique." Kuang also exhibited the most extreme example in Guangzhou of the eccentricity fashionable among late-Ming literati.
In poems about Kuang, nineteenth-century Cantonese literati envisioned his eccentricity as a manifestation of his loyalty while in prose commentaries they typically saw it as symptomatic of the maladies of late-Ming literati culture.
