Kingdoms of the Savanna: The Luba and Lunda Empires | Thematic Essay | Timeline of Art History | The Metropolitan ...   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-25)
The Luba empire's expansion was due to its development of a form of government that was durable enough to withstand the disruptions of succession disputes and flexible enough to incorporate foreign leaders and governments.
Dynastic rulers of the Luba empire traced their ancestry to the mythic Kalala Ilunga, a hunter who was credited with toppling the cruel and despotic ruler Nkongolo and introducing signature elements of Luba culture.
According to Lunda genesis myths, a Luba hunter named Chibinda Ilunga introduced the Luba model of statecraft to the Lunda sometime around 1600 when he married a local princess and was granted control of her kingdom.

Although the history of the Luba people is one of violence and warfare, their artistic style is characterized by harmonious integration of organically related forms.
The splendid artistic achievements of the Luba are due to a felicitous intermingling of different racial and cultural elements, and to the high standards prevailing at the court.
Among the characteristics of Luba sculpture are: intricate hair-dress, often in the form of a cross, or falling down like a cascade; a grooved diagonal band separating the hair-line from the forehead; eyes shaped like coffee-beans; small simplified ‘cat’s ears’; ornamental cicatrices in relief on the body; the surface elaborately worked and polished.
