I was also amazed how he survived in the jungles of Lubang, Philippines for 29 years in which he first started off with a large group of soldiers and then it narrowed to himself after his comrades surrendered/gave up/killed in action.
It was estimated that he and his comrades have killed an estimated 30+ citizens in Lubang.
He was also trained to be skeptical so when flyers and search parties went all around Lubang telling that the war was over, he thought the enemy (the Allies) went to great lengths in trying to trick him.

The P17 million (US$306,000) passenger terminal building at the port of Tilik is part of the three-phase development of the Lubang port that will serve as the gateway to the island - initially to Southern Luzon - by opening opportunities and enhancing business and tourism.
The Lubang port development, Cusi said, would open the island to Calatagan, Batangas; Abra de Ilog, San Jose, Coron and other municipalities of Occidental Mindoro; Calapan and other Oriental Mindoro provinces; Palawan, Visayas and Mindanao.

Second Lieutenant Onoda Hiroo (小野田 寛郎), a Japanese army intelligence officer, was stationed on Lubang Island in the Philippines when it was overrun by United States forces in February 1945, towards the conclusion of World War II.
Lieutenant Onoda emerged from the jungle 29 years after the end of World War II, and accepted the order of surrender in his dress uniform and sword, with his 25 calibre rifle still in operating condition, 500 rounds of ammunition and several hand grenades.
He revisited Lubang Island in 1996, donating $10,000 for the local school on Lubang.
