Lubbock County was split off from the Bexar District by the legislature on August 21, 1876, as an unorganized county and was successively attached for administration to Young, Baylor, and Crosby counties.
Lubbock County was attractive to the growing number of people lured to West Texas by the favorable land laws of the state as well as by fertile soil.
Lubbock County had a Republican congressman by the 1980s and voted for Ronald Reagan in 1984, George H. Bush in 1988 and 1992, and the Republican candidate for governor in 1982 and 1985; it divided its loyalty among Republican and Democratic candidates for state offices.

Lubbock is the ninth-largest city in the state of Texas, located in the northwestern part of the state, a region known historically as the Llano Estacado.
The county of Lubbock was founded in 1876, named after Thomas Saltus Lubbock, a Confederate colonel and Texas Ranger, but the town of Lubbock was not founded until 1890, when it was formed from a unique merger arrangement between two smaller towns, "Old Lubbock" and Monterey.
Lubbock, Texas is the economic hub (hence its nickname, the "Hub City") of a multi-county agricultural region commonly called the "South Plains." The area is the largest contiguous cotton-growing region in the world and is heavily dependent on irrigation water drawn from the Ogallala Aquifer.

I have found that people in Texas generally refer to "West Texas" as being roughly those lands in and around Lubbock, although oftentimes it seems the moniker refers to anything west of Fort Worth.
Far West Texas, or those lands west of the Pecos River, is known as the Trans-Pecos, or sometimes the western panhandle.
These counties are generally flat with mostly easy access; in many cases paved or dirt roads run right over the highpoint contour.

We have completed a study of the meteorological conditions involved in the May 7, 1985 hailstorm which moved across Lubbock County, Texas traversing the southwest corner of the city of Lubbock.
As the storm began to dissipate, rain-cooled outflow air caused gusty winds and marble-size hail throughout central and southern portions of the city of Lubbock.
Areas in southwest Lubbock which reported golf ball-size hail or larger were shaded on the figure.
