The PAs and remaining untransformed areas with moderate population density are largely concentrated in the northern part of Swaziland, where it is possible to outline a relatively well-defined, largely intact or near-intact corridor of natural landscape running west-to-east across the country (the "Northern Corridor").
GEF funding is sought to support for conservation investments on the ground (the establishment of core conservation areas to protect globally significant biodiversity sites and linkages) and to build the technical capacity within and outside government to maintain them over the long term.
The low population density within the "backbone" of the Corridors (comprised of the conservation, tourism development and linkage areas) is expected, because the Corridors were designed to incorporate as much as possible of the relatively untransformed and unsettled "protection-worthy" natural habitat areas of the country, with high biodiversity and nature tourism value.

Grossman warns that in the long run, conservation objectives may be compromised if communities discover that they are unable to reap the anticipated social and economic benefits, and if their concerns are not adequately addressed.
Despite some reservations, however, most conservationists agree that transfrontier parks are Southern Africa’s best hope of protecting its fragile environment and stimulating its tourism industry in a way that encourages fruitful collaboration with its neighbours, and does not sacrifice the needs of rural communities.
These values state that protected areas play a vital role in sustainable development, and cannot be managed as conservation islands divorced from the social and economic context in which they exist.
