Synovial fluid is believed to have two main functions: to aid in the nutrition of articular cartilage by acting as a transport medium for nutritional substances, such as glucose, and to aid in the mechanical function of joints by lubrication of the articulating surfaces.
Elastohydrodynamic lubrication has been defined as a form of fluid lubrication occurring when bearing surfaces are sufficiently elastic for the lubricant pressure generated by motion under a given load to depress the surfaces a distance greater than their highest peaks, thus facilitating maintenance of a fluid film.

 Temperature Stability
Fluid temperature instability is the result of various machine operating factors such as component integrity (design, selection, manufacture, application and maintenance), duty cycle severity (load application, magnitude and duration), environmental hostility and heat absorption/desorption.
Viscosity decreases rapidly with increasing temperature because the mobility of the fluid molecules becomes hyperactive as gas is desorbed and lighter fractions of the fluid vaporize.
The thermal stability of a fluid is its ability to resist decomposition due to temperature alone.

 Glossary
Since the apparent viscosity of a non-Newtonian fluid holds only for the shear rate (as well as temperature) at which it is determined, the Brookfield viscometer provides a known rate of shear by means of a spindle of specified configuration that rotates at a known constant speed in the fluid.
Fluid friction occurs between the molecules of a gas or liquid in motion, and is expressed as shear stress.
Full-fluid-film lubrication is normally hydrodynamic lubrication, whereby the oil adheres to the moving part and is drawn into the area between the sliding surfaces, where it forms a pressure, or hydrodynamic, wedge.

Computational fluid dynamics in theoretical simulations of elastohydrodynamic lubrication
Lubrication is a sub-area of tribology, which is the science of interacting bodies in relative motion, two other sub-areas being wear and friction.
Lubrication is commonly referred to as a way of reducing friction and protecting the surfaces from wear.
In almost all numerical simulations of lubrication performed today, the hydrodynamics are modelled by an equation referred to as the Reynolds equation.

Optimization of Contamination Control Practices - Improve Overall System Performance
The importance of filtration in the optimization of a hydraulic or lubricating system has been established in numerous studies that directly correlate the detrimental effects of particulate contamination to useful component life.
The contaminated fluid challenges the test filter and any contaminant not captured by this filter is returned to the reservoir for additional passes through the filter.
Clean fluids indicate a successful contamination control program, where care is given to proper filtration selection and placement based on the beta ratio of the filter.

 Friction and Wear, 2003, Vol.24, No.2
A precise automodel solution has been found when the lubricating fluid reaches the bearing in the state of full relaxation when viscosity depends on pressure exponentially.
The found solutions lead to conclusions that the elasticity of the lubricating fluid affects negatively the working characteristics because forces of friction increase while the ultimate loading reduces compared with these parameters for the Newtonian fluid.
The sliding velocity is represented as function of shear stress and elastic shear deformation that appear in the layer of the material adjacent to the walls.

Aircraft technology helps diagnose artificial hip, knee problems
Meyer takes a sample of a patient's synovial fluid — " it's a large component of the lubricating fluid around your knee or hip," she said — and uses a process called bio-ferrography to capture the tiny particles of polyethylene, metal, bone and cement using a very strong magnet.
Since most of the wear debris isn't magnetic and therefore wouldn't be collected by the device, she adds to the fluid sample a magnetic compound that binds to the non-magnetic particles.
Meyer's interest in this research was sparked when she was a graduate student at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute studying the lubrication of artificial hip joints.
