  Luc Besson
Luc Besson was born in Paris in 1959.
Besson had a far easier ride with the censors for his next film, The Fifth Element, a lavish, tongue-in-cheek science fiction extravaganza based on a story he wrote when he was a teenager.
Although Luc Besson is most visible for his work as a director, he is also pursuing a successful career as a producer.

 Nil By Mouth: Luc Besson
Besson's second film, "Subway," starred Christopher Lambert in a Cesar-winning performance (one of thirteen Cesar nominations garnered by the film) as a thief on the run who becomes involved in a fantastic sub-culture of Parisians living in the city's underground.
Besson's first film to be made in English, boasting an international cast, was distributed in the US in a version that suffered various unauthorized alterations to its scenes and to Eric Serra's score, including a changed ending.
Besson's "La Femme Nikita" was the director's first global sensation, a film that inspired remakes in both the US and Hong Kong, and made international stars of its leads, Jean Reno and Anne Parrilaud.

 Notes on Luc Besson Films.
Besson, it appears, is saying this cannot be – life cannot be summed up and explained.
Besson’s later films are more complex and daring in that they deal with the apparent disintegration and decay of society while the façade remains intact.
I recently saw "Taxi" (written and produced by Besson) and thoroughly enjoyed its humour and visual style, though I felt this was definitely "Besson light" as it also lacked the interest and import of his previous efforts, though I am sure this was quite deliberate in this case.

Along similar lines, Besson has said that he made the character to look as androgynous as possible, thereby dredging up another bit of slander leveled against her by her enemies but contradicted by the eyewitness accounts.
Based on Besson's comments in "Le Monde" and elsewhere, he was apparently attracted to doing a film about Joan of Arc because he thought she was androgynous like the character played by his (then) lover Milla Jovovich in "The Fifth Element", and so he found them both "sexy".

Guardian Unlimited Film | | Luc Besson interviewed by Richard Jobson
[At Besson's request, the more usual format of half an hour of one-on-one interview then questions from the audience for the remaining 45 minutes was abandoned, and the interview consisted entirely of questions from the audience, with Richard Jobson managing proceedings.
Question: A couple of years ago you were reported to have said you were only going to make ten feature films and now you're on eight.
A very good friend of mine watched the film and said: "Luc, there is one thing you have to learn and that is when you have nothing to say - shut up!" So I decided not to make films any more and to be an assistant.
