Luca Giordano - Biography   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-31)
Luca Giordano was born in Naples in 1634, the son of Antonio Giordano, an undistinguished follower of Jusepe de Ribera (1591-1652).
Giordano's openness to diverse artistic currents has long been recognized, and his ability to change his manner to fit a given subject or the desires of his patrons makes it difficult to plot a linear course for his stylistic development at this or any other moment in his life.
In 1680-1685 Giordano was again in Florence to execute two large decorative commissions, the dome of the Corsini Chapel in the Church of the Carmine and the gallery and library frescoes in the Palazzo Medici-Riccardi.

Giordano's art represents a loosening of strictures, a growing sense of personal intellectual exploration, a lessening of Rome's attraction for artists and the impact of an enlarging private marketplace, alongside the established patronage system of church and state.
Giordano was considered one of the most important decorative artists of his time, and created some of the most important frescoes and church altarpieces in Europe.

One anecdote of his rapidity of work is that the queen of Spain having one day made some inquiry about his wife, he at once showed Her Majesty what the lady was like by painting her portrait into the picture on which he was engaged.

 LACMA Luca Giordano
Born in Naples in 1634, Giordano studied under the Spanish painter Jusepe de Ribera, who was active in Naples.
Giordano’s ability to assimilate influences as diverse as those of Veronese, Rubens, Pietro da Cortona, and Velazquez resulted in the elaboration of a unique style.
Unlike many other artists of his time, Giordano did not fall into oblivion after his death: his work remained admired and studied throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, and it was widely collected—particularly in the United States—in the 20th century.
