On de Heere's picture the jacket has a roundish hood and a long tail, whereas nowadays the jackets in this region have rather pointed hoods and are cut off straight or at most provided with a small dorsal flap, besides often having a short slit in front.
The man, who has a somewhat distorted sinew-backed bow in his hand, is dressed in a costume similar to that of de Heere's Eskimo except for the fact that the jacket is shorter in front.
It seems a reasonable conclusion, therefore, that the peculiar features of dress pictured by both de Heere and White are characteristic of the Thule Culture and still existed in southern Baffin Island at the close of the 16th century.

Unfortunately, few pictures were drawn or painted of the English bourgeoisie or servants, and so it is not until 1570 that we find a portrait which shows a coif of this time in detail.
A sketch of London Gentlewomen, drawn in 1570 by Flemish artist Lucas de Heere, is one of the best examples we have of coifs worn during this decade.
A band of fabric, or under-cap of some kind, is worn underneath this coif, similar to that worn by the Englishwomen in de Heere's sketch.

 Celtic Dress of the 16th C.
The first is a picture from 1562 entitled 'La Sauvage d'Ecosse' printed in 'Recevil de la Diversite des Habits' in Paris.
The second picture is by Lucas de Heere (1567-1577) entitled "Schotsche edelvrouwe en burgenvrouwe." The dress is not unlike Continental dress but long out of date.
De Heere's illustration of this dress shows the distinct Irish half-sleeve that is a strip of cloth that covers on ly the top of the arm.

 Making the Irish Leine - Pictures   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-26)
These two pictures are by an artist named Lucas de Heere, a Dutch painter who lived in England from 1567 to 1577.
One source I read speculated that the later source works de Heere used were clearer.
As you can see, two of the people in the pictures are very similar -the artist seems to have been taking another crack at the same thing.

This outfit is based on the illustrations by Lucas de Heere and the "After the Quick" print from the Ashmolean Museum.
The ionar may be of wool or leather, in any colour, decorated as shown in the Ashmolean and De Heere's illustrations or unadorned as the Kilcommon jacket.
Men may go bare-legged and bare-footed as shown in De Heere's illustrations and the Ashmolean print, or they may wear trews like the Kilcommon trews (also described here).

This ensemble was inspired by a sketch of london gentlewomen created by Lucas de Heere in 1570.
The undergarment is a loose kirtle, based very closely on the loose kirtle in Janet Arnold's Patterns of fashion.
I couldn't afford stiff peau de soie, and so backed the silk with "Touch of Gold" interfacing, which added body and kept the edges from fraying, while being almost invisible to the eye.

The outfit is made up of a smock and petticoat, over which I'm wearing a light-weight wool kirtle.
The kirtle laces at the sides and is stiffened with an applewood busk (carved by my father) and a few strips of reed at the side-front.

McClintock compared this description with De HeereÕs picture to verify the picture and the description, and he found some close matches.
He reminds us that GernonÕs description was written approximately seventy years after De HeereÕs picture was drawn, so we should expect some differences.
Gernon and De Heere may have been studying different areas of Ireland (Gernon describes a number of areas), and may have different reasons for their descriptions.

The one on the right appears to be a fishwife (I can't read the writing near her head, but I recall someone else saying so) and the other three are burgesses or merchants wives or daughters.

 ThothWeb - Stonehenge: a new view from a medieval artist
The drawing shows four of Stonehenge’s trilithons, with two small squares on top of each lintel representing the carved tenons on the uprights poking through.
“In reality the tenons are not that long, but they also struck the first modern artists — they are shown on the 16th century illustration by Lucas de Heere,” Professor Heck says in the current issue of British Archaeology.
The drawing is in the part of the chronology dealing with post-Roman England, and is connected with the legend of Hengist and Horsa, the Saxon invaders, their ally Vortigern, the usurping British ruler, and his exiled rival Aurelius Ambrosius, set in AD480-85.

 A Group of Englishwomen - 1570
First, let's look at street scene by a flemish visitor to England.
This drawing of Heere's gives us a valuable look at lower and middle class English fashion--the clothing worn by those who could not afford portraits painted of themselves, and who in any case wouldn't have worn their street clothes for such a painting.
If you contrast the dress of these women with, say, the clothing worn by An Unknown Girl painted the year before, the most obvious difference between them is its simplicity of the London womens' outfits.
