  VI Underground Coal Mining etc
The coal was extracted from drift mines in the Pittsburgh coal seam, which outcrops along the hillside, and transported by canoe to the nearby military garrison.
The room-and-pillar mining method is used in all of Pennsylvania’s underground bituminous coal mines including longwall mining operations, where it is used to develop the haulage and ventilation systems, and to delineate and support the longwall panels.
Mine layout in this early period was radial, typically incorporating two shafts sunk from the surface to the coal seam with perpendicular entries driven for a distance of 125 to 250 feet from the shafts.

 History of Coke
Before the advent of large-scale mining in Jefferson and Indiana counties, coke was manufactured by burning coal in heaps on the ground in such a way that only the outer layer burned, leaving the interior of the pile in a carbonized state.
In 1896, the huge mine was sold to the RandP CandI as part of the assets of the Bell, Lewis and Yates Mining Co. The coking plant at Soldier consisted of 100 ovens, some dating to 1880 and at that time supplied with coking coal by Old Soldier mine, which was abandoned before 1900.
In 1972, the plant at Lucerne was shut down; as the ovens grew cold, the glow of the beehives dimmed Indiana County forever.
