Lucets have been used since the 1650's to make a square non-elastic chain or cord.
A lucet, sometimes called a chain fork or hayfork, is a lyre-shaped device that is flat and two-pronged.
The size of the chain could be fine or coarse, depending on the size and sturdiness of the lucet and the nature of the thread or yarn.

Lucet is a method of cordmaking or braiding which is believed to date back to the Viking and Medieval periods, when it was used to hang useful items from the belt.
The only tools necessary to lucet are a length of yarn and a lucet fork, also called a lucet or a chain fork.
To cast on, the yarn is put through the hole in the lucet from the front, and the yarn in front of the lucet is wound around the prongs twice in a figure-of-eight.

Lucet - Cunnan   (Site not responding. Last check: )
No one has been able to prove the useage of the lucet between these two time periods yet, however finds of other braiding techniques including plaiting and fingerloop braiding have been documented between the 10th and 16th centuries.
Lucets mostly produce square-profiled cords that are quite neat and nifty, and VERY tough (perfect for poynts or draw-strings), but use up a lot of thread to produce.
Braids made on a lucet need to be made from thread that can take a bit of abrasion, as the technique will cause the thread to rub against the horns of the lucet when the loop is pulled tight.

In medieval Europe the Lucet was in common use as in the absence, or due to the expense of metal fasteners, many garments were drawn up or laced by the means of cords.

The lucet was widely used until the advent of the industrial revolution when machines took over the manufacture of lace and cords.

If the lucet has a hole at the base, put the free end of the thread through it from the front, otherwise just hold the thread there with your left thumb.
Turn the lucet clockwise (as seen from above), which has the effect of wrapping the yarn around the peg which is now on the right.Lift the bottom loop over the top loop on the right prong, and pull the yarn to tighten the loop.
Start the lucet cord the usual way, and work until the cord is established and sturdy (and you get close to the section where you want beads.) Take the end of the beading weft, and lay it across the center of the lucet, across the developing cord.

Either way, his only fear was that Lucet would somehow take this prize and try to claim it for himself, and as the hours had passed without a check-in, he grew more and more certain that this was the case.
