Topic: Luciano Fabro

Luciano Fabro; pioneer in Italian mixed-media art movement; 70 | The San Diego Union-Tribune
Luciano Fabro, a prominent artist and theorist in Arte Povera, a movement that began in Italy in the 1960s and championed unusual materials and unorthodox ideas, died June 22 in Milan.
Fabro was born in Turin and, after his father's death, was raised around Udine, in the Friuli region.
Fabro described his work, possibly with some humorous exaggeration, as “Herculean,” leaving behind the “easy, seductive, flowery way.” Throughout his career, his art output was accompanied by prolific writing and lecturing about its meaning.

Bienal - Universalis - Luciano Fabro   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-05)
Luciano Fabro works on an idea of art as a form of knowledge in which the material exhibition of the object and the environmental structure becomes a solicitation towards new and problematic formulations of thought.
Fabro, artist, then, carries out his creative activity as a manual exercise that is also a material instrument of life, an anthropological fact, in the consciousness that it is not an image but a simulacrum of reality.
Luciano Fabro was born November 20, 1936, in Turin.

Art in America: A message from Luciano Fabro - Museum of Modern Art, San Francisco, California
Luciano Fabro's name is far from unknown in the U.S., but until last fall he had never had a major show of his work in America.
Fabro, born in Turin in 1936, is often associated with the Arte Povera artists who emerged in Italy in the 1960s.
Fabro often accompanies his work with written statements, and in the San Francisco exhibition he provided a handout, headed "I would like to leave a message," in which he attempted to sum up his approach to art.

Luciano Fabro - Independent Online Edition > Obituaries
Fabro's insistence that the truth was not to be found in Celant's form of minimalism was surprising, as his own background had all the makings of social militancy.
Fabro was older than many of his fellow Arte Poverists, however: he was already in his late twenties when economic recession hit Italy in the early 1960s, and in his thirties when students stormed the Venice Biennale in 1968.
Fabro's late-1960s Piede series, so derided by the Daily Mail, mocked Italian classicism by clothing monstrous feet in silk; his famous maps of Italy, made in wood and lead and gilt bronze, played on the peninsula's resemblance to a boot.

Exhibiton 62; Luciano Fabro; So ist das Leben, so ist die Moral, so ist die Geschichte
The Italian artist Luciano Fabro, born 1936, has conceived for Portikus an installation situated in the field of tension between outside and inside, history and present.
As Fabro stated, he would like to weave "threads of thought" between Portikus' current function as exhibition hall and its earlier function as municipal library, the front columns of which are the only remains of the classicist building destroyed in WWII.
The renowned artist Luciano Fabro already became known in the 60s as representative of Arte Povera, along with the artist colleagues Mario Merz, Jannis Kounellis, Alighiero e Boetti, Michelangelo Pistoletto, and others.

And since Fabro is a student of Joseph Beuys, the allusions in a single sculpture can range from art and architecture to science, mythology, religion, cultural history and contemporary politics.
It is not the penetration of one form by the other that Fabro suggests, so much as the interpenetration of the masculine and feminine elements in both.
With the title of the work scrawled in Fabro's own handwriting on one of the marbles, there is a violence in the way the "day" part of each sculpture impinges on that of the "night".

Walker Art Center : The Shock of the View : Luciano Fabro
One of Italy's most influential contemporary artists, Luciano Fabro is a leading figure in the Arte Povera movement that emerged in Italy in the mid - 1960s.
Fabro uses Greek mythology as a source for the title.
Their comments reveal some of the characteristics that make the work popular -- the referencing of a familiar story or narrative; the use of an everyday material (flour); and the way in which the work reveals the process by which it is made.

Tate Modern | Past Exhibitions | Zero to Infinity: Atre Povera 1962-1972
Since Fabro wanted to reassert the importance of crafts-manship (traditionally deemed 'low' art) and sensuousness in art, he found these rich materials highly appropriate.
In the same year, he began another series of sculptures portraying the familiar shape of Italy in different materials such as fur, gold, glass chips or lead.
The use of an easily recognisable shape in these works allowed for a full concentration on their texture and tactility.
