Luchino Visconti - Films as Director:, Other Films:
The films of Luchino Visconti are among the most stylistically and intellectually influential of postwar Italian cinema.
Born a scion of ancient nobility, Visconti integrated the most heterogeneous elements of aristocratic sensibility, and taste with a committed Marxist political consciousness, backed by a firm knowledge of Italian class structure.
Sandra's love for and sense of solidarity with her brother follows upon a racial solidarity with her father and race, but Gianni's love, on the other hand, is underpinned by a desire for his mother, transferred to Sandra.

 La Caduta Degli dei
Like so many of Visconti's films, The Damned is the story of the decline and decomposition of a family, and as in Senso and The Leopard in particular, the fortunes of individuals are linked to wider developments at a climactic moment of history.
Again like Mann, Visconti makes use of various Wagnerian leitmotifs, such as fire and play-acting, which become a key underpinning of the symbolic structure of the film.
In short, The Damned, without being one of Visconti's finest films, is still a remarkable work, but it is one which, for its own sake, needs to be rescued from some of the more inflated claims—political, psycho-sexual, and mythological—which have sometimes been made for it, albeit with the best of intentions.

The mayors were nominated by the Province of Piacenza by the most renowned families of whom the Scotti and the Visconti families.
He returned there three years later and governed until 1316, the year of the livid conflict with Galeazzo Visconti who besieged the fortress with a mighty army.
The Scotti barricaded themselves inside with their armigers and three thousand farm labourers, but after a long resistance were forced to surrender.

Lucky Luciano DVD - MovieMail UK
Instead a combination of 'documented reality' based on painstaking research, and visually arresting images reconstruct episodes from Luciano's life and make clear the connections between events in Italy and the United States, and the interests that Lucky Luciano served.
Far from being a Robin Hood, Luciano's corruption and greed is shown to contribute to the poverty and backwardness of his native Sicily.
When Rossi filmed Salvatore Giuliano in the sixties he used gritty fl and white photography and authentic locations, the population of the Sicilian village in which the Bandit was assasinated was also put to good use.

Pasqualino De Santis Biography :: Hollywood.com   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-01)
For the latter, De Santis succeeded his teacher when Di Vezano became ill and it marked the beginning of a long and fruitful collaboration between director and cameraman which included "Re: Lucky Luciano" (1973), "Bizet's Carmen" (1984) and "Chronicle of a Death Foretold" (1987).
He was also responsible for the arresting images in Luchino Visconti's "The Damned" (1969) and, especially, "Death in Venice" (1971).
De Santis went on to collaborate with directors as diverse as Robert Bresson ("Lancelot of the Lake" 1974; "L'Argent" 1983) and American Jerry Schatzberg ("Misunderstood" 1984).

 Francesco Rosi
A year later he was back in Naples and had resumed his legal studies but as the war ended he was spending most of his time doing theatre and radio.
The title of Rosi's next film, Lucky Luciano, would have suggested a gangster film and indeed, given Rosi's enduring interest in exploring the interconnection between legal and illegal power networks, the model of the gangster film and the crime thriller had never been far from the surface of many of the previous films.
Nevertheless Lucky Luciano is a "cine-inchiesta" more than a fictional biography of the great crime boss although the recreation of the character of Lucky Luciano through the great acting talents of Gian Maria Volontè certainly manages to present something of a psychological portrait of this dark and enigmatic figure.

Slant Magazine - DVD Review: The Children Are Watching Us
De Sica is above such trite, face-rubbing orchestrations, which are meant to show she's conscious and guilty of her sin.
You forgive the film its flaws because it's always trying to figure out the right thing to do, not unlike the man who alternately screams at and asks Andrea and Nina's son Pico (Luciano De Ambrosis) if he's okay after catching the boy stopped in horror near Rome-bound train tracks.
The Children Are Watching Us is a marvel of complex visual and emotional scope, and its surface is no less simple than the fabulous shells of Shoeshine and The Garden of the Finzi-Continis.

INKPOT#93 CLASSICAL MUSIC FEATURE: MAHLER The Middle and Late Symphonies - An Inktroduction
A closer study of the music reveals that Mahler's designs are not only logical and purposeful, they are ineffably beautiful in their own way.
The Fifth Symphony undoubtedly contains some of Mahler's most well-known music, not the least of which because of Luciano Visconti's film Death in Venice which incorporated the hauntingly beautiful Adagietto.
The symphony begins, however, with an anguished funeral march, leading into the storm movement which attempts, and ultimately fails, to overcome the despair of the first movement.

The Luzhin Defence: Cinephiles Movie Review   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-01)
Luzhin's advantages --both in love and in chess-- suddenly become jeopardized by the unexpected reappearance of his longtime teacher and mentor Valentinov (Stuart Wilson), an influential man who expects to see the former student lose.
Shot in the paradisiacal Villa Erba in Cernobbio (a nineteenth century villa and childhood home of Italian filmmaker Luciano Visconti), The Luzhin Defence lures the viewer into a setting characterized by beauty, luxury and grace.
Thus, placing Luzhin in this setting --amidst graceful, upper-class competitors-- emphasizes the protagonist's aloofness and seems to intensify Valentinov's (the antagonist's) own obsession in proving that Luzhin simply does not belong there.

A director practically unknown outside horror circles, Fulci was born in Rome and attended medical school (one could argue that such vocational training explains his clinical eye and artistic concern for images of bodily disintegration and mutilation, elements that would become a staple of his movies).
However, it was not long before Fulci moved on to study filmmaking under the tutelage of eminent Italian directors like Luciano Visconti, Federico Fellini, and Michelangelo Antonioni.
One of the most prolific filmmakers of his era, Fulci directed 56 films during an uneven career that spanned 35 years.
