Lucien and his brother Mauro were soon embroiled in the sport, Lucien's first event being on the Alpine Rally in 1951 when he was just 17 years old.
Money was always a problem but Bianchi worked himself into a position to be competitive in sports car events, notably the Tour de France Automobile which he won in 1957 with Olivier Gendebien.
Lucien however won the race as a member of the Gulf-sponsored JWA team and took his Ford GT40 to victory with Pedro Rodriguez.

"I was the passenger in the car that was hit by the Lucien Bianchi Citroen during the running of the 1968 London to Sydney Marathon.
I have said 'hit by' because I felt at the time, and still believe, that we were travelling on an open public road at a reasonable speed, in a safe manner when the accident happened.
Lucien Bianchi as far as I know never made any adverse statements about my friend and I. He appeared to be able to take the attitude that anything can happen in a motor sport event and unfortunately in that case it cost him the Marathon win.

Later the CX was turned into a group 1 rally car as well, but by then the operation had lost momentum, helped by the fact that Citroën went through massive financial troubles and was since many years receiving help from Michelin and PSA who soon took 100% ownership.
